A new three-year contract between the town and call firefighters provides financial incentive to those who respond to emergency calls often, officials say. Fire Chief Thomas Daige said Monday under the deal - which the Board of Selectmen ratified last week - volunteer firefighters who do not respond to at least 50 percent of calls each month can have their stipend withheld.

Fire crews battled a fully involved house fire in Gold Bar early Tuesday. The fire at the vacant home on 144th Street Southeast and Whiteman Road was called in to 911 at about 3:20 a.m. When crews arrived, the fire was upgraded to a second alarm. Because the flames were too intense for fire crews to enter the home, the fire had to be fought defensively from the outside.

A fire in rooftop garden of a high-rise building sent a plume of white smoke billowing over part of downtown Seattle Monday night. Firefighters were called to the scene just before 7:30 p.m. of the 17th floor of the Russell Investment Center located at 2nd Ave. and University, next to the Seattle Art Museum.
