Proposed Indiana bill aims to track higher cancer rates among firefighters

U.S. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth met with local fire service members Wednesday to discuss a bill aimed at tackling increased cancer rates among firefighters. The Firefighter Cancer Registry Act, co-sponsored by Indiana's 9th Congressional District representative, would provide the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with the funding and capability to collect and analyze data related to cancer incidents within the profession.

Washington fire department's new program helped save mother, daughter hit by car

The Spokane Fire Department said Thursday that two people are alive thanks to a program called Automatic Aid. On Wednesday afternoon, a mother and daughter were hit by a car in the North Spokane Costco parking lot. Officials said at one point, the mother was pinned under the car and crews had to lift the car to pull her out safely.

Fire truck burns in Monument Hill Fire; investigation to get underway soon

Homes, cars and power poles weren’t the only things that went up in smoke in the Monument Hill Fire this week. A Grant County Fire District 3 truck fell victim to the firestorm on Wednesday. Fire District 3 Chief Don Fortier says the two firefighters manning the truck were doing structure protection on a house at Rd 13 and Rd J when the fire exploded and spread into the brush underneath the truck.

Seattle: Northgate fire victims locked out as their apartments are looted

Nearly every day, Kristen Bass travels to the Park Meridian apartments in Northgate, seeking reassurance that important pieces of her life are still intact. The 30-unit apartment building where she lived for 18 months was badly damaged in an Aug. 5 fire, leaving Bass and about 70 other tenants searching for new homes while the insurance company documents the extent of the damage, and the landlord makes plans for the building’s demolition.
