PHOTO: Freeman shooting victim visits Spokane firefighters who treated her

Spokane Fire District 8 tweeted a picture Monday of one of the students wounded in the Freeman High School shooting, visiting the firefighters who treated her. The Fire Department says Gracie has made an amazing recovery and “truly embodies #Freemanstrong.”

Henderson (NV) Opens First New Fire Station in Years

The nearly 11,000-square-foot building includes three apparatus bays, training facilities and rescue off-road vehicle, to help firefighters get to hikers in hard-to-reach terrains.  

The station houses one fire engine and its crew, which consists of a captain, an engineer, one firefighter and one firefighter/paramedic. The station will start with seven dorm rooms but has space for four more, city spokeswoman Kathleen Richards said.

Effingham (IL) Fire Department Adds Pumper Fire Apparatus

"We increased the size of the tank for interstate coverage so we have more water out there and we have a little bit of area we cover that is known as 'no-mans land' that we don't necessarily have hydrants there," explained Fire Chief Joe Holomy. At a cost of $428,000, the new pump truck was paid for in cash with $400,000 that the department saved over the last five years. The remainder came from foreign fire tax monies, which come from a 2 percent tax on out-of-state companies selling fire insurance policies in Illinois. The funds are collected and then distributed throughout the state to local fire departments each year. "There aren't a lot of frills on it," said Holomy. "It's a basic engine."

Audit Criticizes Bohemia (NY) Fire District Spending

Kansas City (KS) Task Force to Examine Fire Department Fixes

According to the union representing the fire department, some of that maintenance would be due for its buildings.

For instance, a fire station at 81st and Leavenworth had a retaining wall collapse.  About a year and a half ago, the front part of the station caved in. This is a station that KCKFD inherited from township fire stations.

At 78th and Kansas Avenue, there is a defect in the roof caused by a faulty beam. The issue could cause a roof collapse.
