Kansas City Wrestles with Huge Firefighter Overtime Costs

An accounting firm’s new report confirms what Kansas City officials already knew through the budgeting process — firefighter overtime is a huge expense, and a few individuals rake in an oversized share of those wages. But the report from BKD, released publicly on Wednesday, doesn’t offer a magic cure for the millions of dollars in overtime that Kansas City government shells out annually to the Fire Department.

Sea-Tac firefighters drill for crash emergency against renewed concerns

Sea-Tac firefighters and police were joined by first responders from 18 other agencies around the South Sound for a required drill for an airplane crash on Wednesday. Using an old 757 fuselage mock up, the pretend scenario was the crash of a Boeing 737 with 150 people on board, just short and to the right of the airport's center runway.

Construction on Kenosha (WI) Fire Station to Start Next Year

Work on a new fire station for the Kenosha Fire Department could begin next year. Two fire stations are set to close and be merged into a "super" station on the site of the shuttered Bain Elementary School, 2210 52nd St. The two stations considered for closure: Station 3, 2121 Roosevelt Road, and Station 5, 2125 Washington Road.
Firefighters and city officials say Station 5 is not able to accommodate larger fire trucks and is in desperate need of repair.

City officials have said no firefighters would lose their jobs, and there may even be a need for increased staffing for the house.

The station, similar to Pleasant Prairie’s new station at 3801 Springbrook Road, would also allow emergency crews to respond more quickly to areas of the city with high demand. And by freeing up resources, the move allows each station in the city to have its own ambulance.

Asbestos (NY) Removal at Kingston (NY) Fire Station 'Substantially Completed'

Asbestos removal at Kingston's Central Fire Station on East O'Reilly Street is largely done, the city engineer says. Ralph Swenson said he has signed a "substantially completed" document regarding the work in the building at 19 E. O'Reilly St. in Midtown.
The project, though reported in May to have been slowed by paperwork problems, was completed in June, Swenson said.

The work was done by Syracuse-based NRC Inc., which was awarded the contract after an April 3 coin toss at City Hall, necessary because NRC and Sauquoit, N.Y-based Sullivan Contracting submitted identical bids of $42,000.

Suspects Sought in $5K Theft at Washington Fire Station

The Klickitat County Sheriff's Office is asking for help finding the thieves who stole $5,500 worth of equipment from a small fire station in rural Washington state. Klickitat County Fire District Chief Wesley W. Long said the theft happened Monday night.
"Having life-saving equipment stolen from our citizens is extremely difficult to comprehend and tolerate," Long said. "It has also created a significant financial burden during a time when we are hosting a significant wildland fire in our jurisdiction."

The Klickitat County Fire District is one of the agencies fighting the Dry Creek fire. Volunteer firefighters showed up at the Cherry Lane station (Station 32) on Tuesday afternoon to retrieve fire trucks to fight a small brush fire. When they arrived, they saw open compartment doors and scattered equipment, and noticed that several items were missing.
