A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Friday morning in Kent, officials said.
The deadly accident took place at about 6 a.m. near the Willis Street crossing. The train was heading north toward Everett, carrying a load of big empty tubs, when it struck a man who was on the tracks, said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas.

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, but with the fun and celebration comes some rules and regulations.
A year ago, Asotin County passed a new ordinance to help cut down on confusion, by creating a countywide standard for when and how long fireworks can be used. That ordinance is now in effect and officials will be enforcing it.

A 4-year-old boy who found a lighter then wandered off when his mom wasn’t watching started the fire that gutted a 7-Eleven in the uptown Vancouver area June 14, according to investigators.
Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said the boy’s mother was talking to the store clerk when the boy found a long-neck lighter in the store, walked off and then lit some items in the store aisles on fire.

A man drew heavy emergency crew presence to the Monroe Street Bridge Thursday morning after he was spotted swimming in the fast-moving Spokane River.
Emergency crews at American Medical Response and the Spokane Fire Department were called at about 8:20 a.m. to the area just west of the Monroe Street Bridge, where they found a man in his shorts, with no shirt, perched on top of a large boulder overlooking the water.
