Kevin Kolber, a battalion chief and 30-year veteran of the South Bend Fire Department, has died.
Kolber, 58, of South Bend, died on Tuesday while visiting family. He was appointed to the department on Jan. 21, 1987, and spent his entire career at the central fire station.
In the early 1990s, Kolber served as captain on Truck 1, and was promoted to battalion chief in 2003.

Relief could be in sight for about 2,500 property owners in southern Teller County, who since mid April have been without the services of their taxpayer-funded fire protection district.
An impasse that started last year between volunteer firefighters and the board of the Four Mile Fire Protection District has reached a partial resolution, as the board hired a new fire chief Tuesday.

Harvest Land has donated a grain rescue tube to the Spiceland Fire Department to fill a gap that could have left farmers in dangerous need.
The Harvest Land Risk management department determined that the equipment was needed in southern Henry and northern Rush counties to help keep their farmers and community safe. If a farmer was trapped in a grain bin or wagon, a grain rescue tube was more than 15 miles away. The donation went to the Spiceland Fire Department to fill that gap.
Harvest Land lost two customers due to grain entrapment in 2016. The company is committed to not only the safety of employees but to the safety of their farmer-members.

The future of the more than century-old Congers Fire Department can be seen along Route 9W. Monday was one of the busiest construction days at the site of the department's new $9.3 million firehouse, said 46-year firefighter Chris Wohl.
The nearly 20,400-square-foot firehouse located at the intersection of the state highway and Dr. Davies Road will be the 121-year-old department’s third building.
The station will have a four-door garage that will face northbound Route 9W, and an additional three doors that will be accessible through a rear entrance from Dr. Davies Drive.
