New Sallisaw (OK) Fire Apparatus Gets Immediate Workout

It hadn't been in Sallisaw but a few hours before the Sallisaw Fire Department had to use its new tanker truck to help combat a fire. Sallisaw Fire Chief Anthony Armstrong said Friday morning he and Assistant Fire Chief Steve Padgett had just returned from picking the tanker up at La Grange, Texas.
Only moments later, the Sallisaw Fire Department, along with the new tanker, responded to an alarm of a fire near Applegate Cove.

The 2017 Model tanker is the first tanker the fire department has ever had, Armstrong said. It was built by Fouts Brothers and has a 3,000-gallon capacity tank. It also boasts a 1250 GPM pump. It took six months to build the tanker once it was ordered.

“It’s as large as any pumper we already have. It can be used as a pumper,” Armstrong said. “It can be used on car fires, or grass fires, or any where there is no fireplug protection.”

The cost for the tanker is $217,299. The Cherokee Nation donated $50,000 toward the purchase and the U.S. Department Agriculture came up with another $50,000, Armstrong said. The City of Sallisaw paid $117,299 in funds it already had budgeted for the tanker.

Elmhurst (IL) Rolls Out Rapid Response Emergency Vehicle

Elmhurst Fire Department officials introduced their new advanced life-support rapid-response vehicle Saturday, introducing the vehicle at the Dancing Under the Stars performance by the Elmhurst College Jazz Band at the Addison Parking Garage. The new utility vehicle, a Ford Explorer provided under a contract with Metro Paramedic Services and staffed around the clock by one paramedic, is intended to fill a small gap in city ambulance coverage.
City officials call the new vehicle more nimble than either an ambulance or a fire engine, and therefore able to reach an accident or illness site more quickly, but acknowledge the vehicle cannot be used to transport a patient to a health care facility.

The city already contracts with Metro for two ambulances, each staffed by two certified paramedics, capable of providing advanced life support. The paramedics can communicate with hospital medical personnel about a patient's condition and administer drugs on site under a doctor's direction.

Magic Valley Quick Response (ID) Units Struggle with Funding and Recruiting

To help with funding, a nonprofit holds a fundraiser every year. They do a ride and a barbecue. The fundraiser was on Sunday this year. They say they usually raise between $20,000 and $30,000. They split it between nine QRUs: Buhl, Castleford, Hagerman, Filer, Salmon, West End, Rupert, Rock Creek and Bliss.
No matter what they raise, organizers say they're not satisfied.

"They're going out and they're saving people because that's just the kind of people they are," said Mandy Wardle, the fundraiser's organizer. "So we're trying to make a difference and make sure that they are capable to keep doing that."

Ultimately the volunteers are happy to help the community.

"It makes you feel good," Kelly said. "You're supporting your community, you're helping your community."

New Milford (NJ) Acquires Military Truck for Water Rescues

The borough Police Department recently acquired a free five-ton military truck that the chief says can be used for emergency shelter and high-water rescue in case of a flood.
The truck's cab and cargo box are air-conditioned and heated. It is also equipped with a generator and hard-shell container that expands to essentially triple in size.

Mayor Ann Subrizi estimated the truck's value to be $120,000. She said the truck had clocked about 4,000 miles.

In March, the Borough Council authorized the chief to register for the federal 1033 program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. It allows surplus military equipment to be transferred to local police at no cost except shipping expenses.
