The City of Mesa has hired a new fire chief, a trailblazer for individuals in her department. Mary Cameli was among the first women firefighters hired by Mesa 33 years ago, and now she is the new chief of the Fire and Medical Department. She was appointed the interim chief on Oct 4 to replace retired Chief Harry Beck, and her permanent position as chief became official on Thursday.

An apparent explosion and fire at a propane supply company on Vashon Island sent three people to area hospitals Friday afternoon, one with third degree burns. 911 dispatchers got a call around 12:30 p.m. of an explosion at Vashon Energy at 20317 Vashon Highway Southwest. Witnesses said passers-by went into the one story building that was already on fire to help employees escape.
