Firefighter hiring grant changes for SAFER FY 2016

The 2016 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant application is due to open in January. Recently, FEMA released information to assist departments in planning their applications for the upcoming program opening. These documents revealed several changes to critical sections of the program that may impact departments’ ability to apply for funding and information needed for their application.

Mexico explosion: 32 dead at fireworks market as search teams comb rubble

This market has become a graveyard. A day ago, families wandered through rows of stalls at San Pablito, searching for fireworks to launch during the holiday season. Now, forensic teams are combing through the charred rubble of this market north of Mexico City, searching for victims' remains. At least 32 people were killed and dozens more were injured in a massive series of explosions Tuesday, officials said.

Ocean Shores Fire Chief Lique resigns

Ocean Shores again is searching for a new fire chief, following the resignation of Chief Thomas Lique. “We wish Tom the best in his new endeavors. The city will be seeking a new Fire Chief over the next few months,” Mayor Crystal Dingler said in a statement. Lique was hired in June 2014 after serving his entire career prior to that with the Key Peninsula Fire Department.

RV Fire in Yakima prompts firefighters to remind people to be cautious with portable heaters

Yakima firefighters want you to be extremely careful with portable heat sources after a man's motor home was destroyed by a fire Monday night. Fire crews were called to the 1100 block of South 18th Street just before 9:30 p.m., but weren't able to save the RV. Investigators say the occupant was using a faulty portable buddy heater that had been adapted to feed from a small propane tank.
