FDNY firefighters pull off daring rope rescue at 6-alarm blaze

Firefighters performed a dramatic rescue dozens of feet above the ground, pulling a man from the window of a burning building in New York City's Upper East Side. The New York Fire Department responded to the six-alarm blaze the started around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, reports WABC, a local affiliate. The fire quickly ripped through all five floors of an apartment building and burst through the roof, killing one person and leaving another in critical condition.

Spokane Fire Department's growing commitment to improving safety gear

If not for the protective gear that saved him, Spokane Fire Department firefighter Chuck McKenzie could have died when he was burned in an apartment fire in North Spokane in September. Nearly two months later, SFD officials said they remain committed to repairing and improving their gear. What happens to the gear when it gets anything from a tear to a life-threatening heat damage? “We really are the tip of the spear,” said Alex Dreager, a firefighter for the SFD and helps sews the gear for the crew.

Closed Pittsburg (CA) Fire Station to Reopen

A fire station that closed in 2013 is set to reopen by Jan. 1, thanks to an improving economy, better-than-expected performance of employee retirement investments and a city fee designed to help pay for fire protection, county officials said Tuesday.
Contra Costa Fire Station 87, on West Leland Road near John Henry Johnson Park and the Delta View Golf Course, closed in July 2013 amid fire budget problems stemming from a downfall in property tax revenues.

Contra Costa Fire District Chief Jeff Carman told the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors that the general economic recovery has helped revive property values, which in turn drives up property tax revenue, a major source of funding for the district. He also credited what he said has been a better-than expected performance of employee investments through the Contra Costa County Employees’ Retirement Association.

Station 87 had first opened in 2000, serving western Pittsburg and parts of Bay Point. It closed after Measure Q, a parcel tax measure on the November 2012 ballot, was defeated by voters.

Also getting credit for helping Station 87 reopen is a new Community Facilities District through which the city of Pittsburg will collect a fee for every new structure built in the city. The money will pay for fire protection and other emergency services. Pittsburg spokeswoman Jill Hecht said it’s too early to know how much money these building fees will bring in.

Chappaqua (NY) Voters Reject Fire Station Expansion

Chappaqua voters have resoundingly rejected borrowing $15.3 million to double the size of the Chappaqua Fire Headquarters. Voters defeated the proposal 632-105 on Tuesday, according to results provided by the town clerk.
Residents had to vote between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. Some voters had to wait 80 minutes to vote, and some left before voting.

The Journal News' Tax Watch reported that the borrowing plan would have cost taxpayers some $900,000 a year for 26 years, and raised spending by 70 percent in the New Castle Fire District.

The fire district, which has separate taxing authority from the town and the school district, would have seen its annual budget go from $1.3 million to $2.2 million, driving property taxes up, to account for the project’s expense.
