Criticism, Boundaries and Useful Feedback

Larry was clearly angry. Carl had used his tools (again) without asking, and even worse, hadn’t returned them (again). Larry told me he had given Carl some “tough feedback.”

He told Carl that he was self-centered and insensitive, and in the future he needed to ask for permission before borrowing anything.

He was surprised and indignant that Carl got angry with him.

Larry didn’t understand that telling Carl off is not “giving feedback.” It’s simply criticism. Setting boundaries around what Carl can borrow is a reasonable thing to do. But that’s not “feedback” either.

Feedback is providing information about your reaction to a product or to a person’s actions, to be used as a basis for improvement. Criticizing and setting boundaries are solely for Larry’s benefit, not Carl’s. Larry might have felt better by blowing off steam. But in the end, it did not lead to a satisfying conversation or resolution to the problem.

If Larry had really given feedback, it’s more likely he would have been heard and have gotten a thoughtful response...

Fire Chiefs endorse position papers on Civil Unrest, Behavior Health & UAS

Fire chiefs from the United States, Canada, Germany and the United Kingdom participated in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Urban Fire Forum (UFF) last week at NFPA headquarters in Quincy, Mass.. NFPA President and CEO Jim Pauley welcomed the chiefs and provided an overview of the association’s strategic plans, reinforcing the critical role urban fire service leaders play in reaching those goals and initiatives.

Flag Lowering

Vancouver Fire Marshal's Office awarded $142K FEMA grant

The Vancouver Fire Marshal’s Office was awarded a $142,753 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to promote fire safety. The funds from the Fire Prevention and Safety grant will go toward the agency’s Project HomeSafe campaign, which aims at reducing the frequency and severity of residential fires through education and outreach.

Woman Charged with Setting Fatal Wilmington Fire

A 27-year-old woman who lived at the Canby Park rowhome that went up in flames has been charged in connection with the deadly fire that killed two Wilmington firefighters and injured five others early Saturday morning.

Beatriz Fana-Ruiz is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree arson, four counts of second-degree assault and seven counts of reckless endangerment, according to state Fire Marshal's Office.

She is the stepdaughter of Missy Napier, who lived in the home with her five children, according to state officials.

The fire ravaged a Wilmington rowhome and left multiple firefighters trapped in the basement of the house when the first floor collapsed. Lt. Christopher Leach and Senior Firefighter Jerry Fickes did not survive.


Senior Firefighter Ardythe Hope and Brad Speakman remains hospitalized at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Pennsylvania. Hope remains in critical, but stable, condition and Speakman was upgraded to stable condition. A photo of him posted Wednesday shows him standing in the hospital smiling with numerous bandages on his hands, legs and head.
