I recently got a phone call from someone who was tasked with evaluating the disciplinary process for a large fire department. This person had previously worked primarily with law enforcement, where policies, procedures, formal structures and extensive published literature exist related to the topic of discipline.

A Washington firefighter returned home from a three-week stretch of battling fires to learn his dog had been adopted by another family. William Jones of Battle Ground had owned his dog Hunter for about a year. During that time they went on hunts and hikes, and Hunter would even hang out at the fire station.

There's no official marker. No sign, no banner, no post in the ground. Instead, it requires wandering off of Highway 20, driving 10 minutes west, and turning down a winding dirt road. The path bends and curves as it snakes its way up into the hillside. There are signs telling people to turn away. Jennifer Zbyszewski understands that.

Firefighters are sending out a message for everyone to do what they can in their homes to prevent fires after a house fire Thursday morning. It happened just after 9 a.m. in the 1000 block of South First Avenue. Firefighters say the fire started on the back patio and reached a nearby motor home. A man was safely rescued by fire crews.
