The shrill blaring of a smoke alarm woke them up. But the harrowing account of two residents trying to navigate stairs through the smoke and flames proved to be a challenge that has shaken this neighborhood. The fire last Sunday gutted a two-story home in the Jefferson Beach Estates neighborhood of Kingston.

A couple local firefighters have finally made it back home after first going to the Snake River Fire in the southeastern part of Washington then to the Fletcher Road Fire near Walla Walla and then to the Palouse Falls Fire on Sunday. We talked with two fire chiefs from our area on the fire season so far and how it's been different from last year.

Downtown Bellevue is full of tall, modern and new buildings. Not far away, the city's fire department says it is saddled with buildings that are too old, too small and in need of new funding. Recently, Bellevue City Council approved a 20-year, $120 million ballot measure to give all nine fire stations seismic upgrades, expand to allow larger fire trucks and build a new facility downtown.

Two off-duty members of the Walla Walla Fire Department, Lt. Eric Wood and Engineer Bryan McIntire, visited the Conconully, Washington, area, which is 20 miles northwest of Omak in the north central part of the state. They were with Eric’s father, Dan Wood, who is the Assistant Fire Chief in Omak, when a call came over Dan’s radio reporting that a 73-year-old man went into cardiac arrest at a nearby restaurant.
