Ohio legislation would allow first responders to treat pets

A bill that will allow first responders to provide medical treatment to dogs and cats has unanimously passed out of the General Assembly and is now headed to Gov. John Kasich’s desk to sign. Pets who are often considered a part of a family “and they should receive treatment if necessary or life-threatening situations,” said Meg Stephenson, executive director of the Animal Friends Humane Society.

Maine fire chief charged with arson resigns

Old Orchard Beach is beginning the search for a new fire chief following the resignation of Ricky Plummer, who has been charged with arson in connection to a seven-alarm fire in April. Plummer, 59, of Biddeford, was arrested on May 7. He is accused of starting a brush and woods fire on April 15 that spanned about 40 acres near Jones Creek.

Suspect climbs tree to avoid arrest, gets hosed down by Washington firefighters

A domestic violence suspect who climbed a tree to avoid arrest early Thursday finally came down hours later after firefighters sprayed him with water, authorities said. The incident began at about 4:30 a.m. in the 800 block of 13th Street when a woman called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend had just broken into her home, assaulted her, and fled the residence, said Shari Ireton of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office.

Georgia firefighter arrested, fired for alleged $20 firehouse theft

A Cherokee County firefighter was arrested and fired after admitting to stealing $20 from his firehouse, the Sheriff’s Office said Thursday. Matthew Knowles, 30, of Woodstock, was charged with theft and released from jail after posting $720 bond Wednesday afternoon, Lt. Jay Baker said. Knowles was the second Cherokee firefighter charged with a crime during the past week, and both were fired from the department.
