Illinois first responders want law to protect them from 'frivolous' lawsuits

A group representing firefighters and municipalities hopes to revive a law that protects first responders from getting sued by people they try to help. The so-called "public duty rule" dates to the 1800s and provides firefighters and paramedics broad immunity from lawsuits stemming from their on-the-job actions.

Arson Awareness Week Focuses on Wildland Fires

During a five-year period, close to one-quarter of the wildland fires that were reported in the U.S. were deemed arson. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) announced that the theme for Arson Awareness Week, May 1-7, is "Prevent Wildfire Arson — Spread the Facts Not the Fire." "Not all wildland is comprised of forests.

Colorado firefighters help coax bear out of apartment

VIDEO - A resident in Eagle County caught a peculiar house guest rummaging through his refrigerator early Saturday. According to a Facebook post from the Eagle River Fire Protection District, crews were dispatched on a service call about 4:45 a.m. Saturday for a report of a bear in the living room of a second-floor apartment.

Charlotte Fire Chief: 1 Firefighter Killed, 1 Firefighter Injured Battling Pineville Fire

Two firefighters were removed from the structure following a MAYDAY.
A firefighter died while battling a 3-alarm fire Saturday night in a Pineville shopping center, Charlotte Fire chief Jon Hannan said.

Pineville Fire crews responded just after 9 p.m. to a fire at Countryside Shopping Center off Pineville-Matthews Road. Charlotte Fire and Mecklenburg County Fire crews assisted. 

Hannan said a mayday call sounded while firefighters were fighting the blaze. 

Two firefighters were removed from the blaze and taken to Carolinas Medical Center, Hannan said.

One Pineville firefighter died and another firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to Hannan.
