James City Fire Station Nears Completion

The James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department is like a big family, members say. That family is moving into a house in May. About 135 firefighters and paramedics will say goodbye to the original Fire Station 1 next month.
First responders have answered the community's calls for service from the station at Richmond and Forge roads for 50 years, covering 110 square miles between New Kent and York counties, said station President Phillip Murdock.

Fire Station 1 was hand-built by volunteer firefighters in 1966. It will be demolished a few weeks after the move to make way for a longer drive way leading to the new station, Volunteer Fire Chief David Nice said.

Nevada National Guard Set to Begin Outfitting C-130 Aircraft with Firefighting Equipment

The 152nd Airlift Wing, Nevada National Guard, is set to begin the process of outfitting its C-130 aircraft with U.S. Forest Service Modular Airborne Fire Fighting Systems (MAFFS) equipment for large-scale wildland firefighting missions across the nation, the National Guard Bureau announced this week.
The development of the MAFFS mission brings large-scale wildland firefighting capabilities to a Guard unit located in the largest national forest in the lower 48 states -- the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest -- prone to massive fires in recent years.

"The 152nd Airlift Wing, Nevada National Guard is the best choice to fulfill the MAFFS mission due to their aircrew experience and geographic area response capability," the bureau said in a statement this week.

The 152nd will become one of four units nationwide with C-130 aircraft outfitted with MAFFS.

"This is another recognition of the capabilities and accomplishments of the men and women of the Nevada National Guard, the pride of Nevada," Governor Brian Sandoval said. "This is good news for the High Rollers of the 152nd Airlift Wing, the state, recently fire-ravaged western regions and the nation."

Since 1974, MAFFS -- a fire retardant delivery system inserted into C-130 aircraft -- has been a joint effort between the U.S. Forest Service and the Department of Defense.

The police in Murcia municipality have more than 250 vehicles across their various divisions, and the fire services 40, servicing 580 police and 200 members of the fire services.

Australia Million Dollar Fire Apparatus Sits Unused Due to Union at Empasse

A state of the art $1 million fire truck has never been used in Ballarat because the CFA and the firefighters' union have not been able to reach an agreement. The HAZMAT fire truck was funded and delivered to Ballarat City in 2014. It has never been used and remains offline.
UFU Firefighter Brenton Smith told The Courier staff were desperate to get the vehicle online, but had been unable to obtain the extra staffing numbers and resources they felt were needed to run the vehicle.

The vehicle is one of a small number in the state, with the Ballarat unit the only one not yet in use. Last week Ballarat firefighters were called to a severe fuel tanker spill in Inglewood, but Ballarat’s decades old vehicle was unsuitable and sent back. It broke down on the way back and has been out of action since.

The CFA west region assistant chief officer Peter O’Keefe said the vehicle was available and ready to be put into service pending the CFA could reach an agreement with the UFU.
