Vancouver: Firefighters climb hundreds of stairs to fight leukemia

It's not often you see firefighters from Corvallis and Longview walking around in downtown Vancouver, but these guys needed a tall building and the 16-floor Smith Tower was the perfect fit. But before they got down to business, Longview Fire Battalion Chief Troy Buzalsky presented Corvallis fire intern Justin Lewis with a special gift.

Neighbor rescues children from Kent fire

An early-morning apartment fire in Kent has forced 30 people out of their homes. Several people suffered minor injuries, but the Kent Fire Department’s spokesman said no one was hospitalized. KIRO 7 found one man who ran into the burning building to get people out. Before firefighters got to the Rock Creek Landing apartments, as flames crawled up the three-story building, a neighbor felt he had no choice but to run in.

'It is unconscionable:' Seattle biz group fears 'Jungle' fires could devastate I-5

A fire under the freeway in Seattle may have been put out quick enough this week, but critics say there's a bigger blaze brewing. "They need to move people out from under the highway who have large amounts of propane tanks under there ready to blow up," said Eugene Wasserman, a Seattle businessman. "The government -- whether it's state, city, local -- are failing to deal with the significant risk to the greater community.
