Olympia reviews emergency management goals ahead of June earthquake drill

In case of a disaster, Olympia officials must be ready to respond and assist in the city’s recovery. To that end, the Olympia City Council is expected to approve the 2016 Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan on March 15. The plan outlines the city’s emergency response policies and assigns tasks. Deputy Fire Chief Greg Wright, who is the city’s emergency management coordinator, told the council Tuesday that the revised plan complies with new state and federal expectations.

Inmate firefighter critically injured battling California brush fire

A female inmate firefighter was critically injured after being struck in the head by a boulder while battling a 7-acre brush fire in Malibu Thursday morning, authorities said. Crews were seen performing life-saving measures until a Los Angeles County Fire helicopter arrived and airlifted the injured firefighter to a local hospital.

First responders are rethinking the role of lights and sirens in their emergency responses. A nationwide trend has some traveling with the flow of traffic to avoid dangerous collisions.Greenfield firefighters answer some 14 emergency calls a day. Usually, they will head to the scene with lights and sirens blaring, regardless of the seriousness of the emergency.

When firefighters attacked a house fire on Nancy Drive in 10 inches of snow and only 10 degrees outside, they say it seemed like a straight-forward house fire. But Jan. 5, 2014 nearly turned deadly. “We thought we had the fire put out,” remembers Firefighter Matt Mackley. Nebraska firefighter battles PTSD diagnosis after surviving explosion

It was all hands on deck for a two-alarm fire that injured seven in late January. "We got very lucky," said Mike Terrell, one of the firefighters that was hurt that day. "We could have had five firefighters and a civilian dead like that." he said as he snapped his fingers. He's referring to a massive fire at the Heafey-Hoffmann-Dworak & Cutler Funeral Home in Omaha.
