Spokane Fire takes on mental health

The Spokane Fire Department is used to battling blazes and saving homes on a daily basis. It’s what they do. But mental health has often been an issue swept under the rug by first responders. “People were ostracized,” Assistant Chief Brian Schaeffer said. “We wanted to change things.” Fire departments around the country are beginning to see a spike in cases of Post Traumatic Stress and even suicides within their departments.

Stevens County fire crews hoping for improvements with levy, bond

Some firefighters are asking for help in the next few days. Stevens County Fire District 1 is looking to make some sizable changes, all with the goal of better responding to emergencies and protecting firefighters. “You are at the busiest station in the fire district, probably accounts for 600-700 calls total within its district,” says Fire Chief Mike Bucy.
