Four months later, Fire Chief Richard Ares is not sure what really happened the day he flew off a porch while fighting a fire in Templeton, landing on his back and fracturing his spine.
He only knows for sure that he is lucky. His back was repairable. The back of his head required 10 staples but it has healed.

A serial arsonist behind a string of blazes in Forest Hills, Queens, taunted police like a Riddler wannabe — leaving behind a coded message at one fire scene that dared cops to solve his puzzle, sources said. But the firebug was as overconfident as his Batman-comic counterpart — since police were quickly able to crack the code and discover his identity.

The National Volunteer Fire Council launched a nationwide recruitment campaign Tuesday to increase the number of volunteers in fire and emergency services.
The Make Me a Firefighter campaign will help build awareness among the public as well as provide departments with the tools and resources to recruit and retain volunteer firefighters.

Playing with fire isn't something that's usually encouraged among kids. But what about performing with fire? A nine-year-old in Seattle is now fighting for his right to do just that.
Hayden is part of the city's fire performance art community.
He's been spinning fire poi regularly, under the watchful eyes of his parents and other highly trained people who've helped teach him the craft.
