Three people whose homes and acres of property were destroyed during the worst wildfire in Washington state history are blaming the Department of Natural Resources for their losses. They all live near Carlton, and filed a lawsuit in Okanogan Superior Court this week naming the State of Washington DNR as defendant.

A woman who became trapped in her car while the Stillaguamish River rose around her was successfully rescued, but not before some harrowing moments. Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies got a call into 911 around 7 a.m. from a panicked driver who said she was trapped in the water. She told dispatchers she was out on Stanwood's Marine Drive, which had been dry before sunrise, but the rising Stillaguamish River suddenly rushed in and swallowed her car.

Fire officials say a blaze that destroyed one home, damaged another and displaced six people was started when a man used a torch to heat metal while fixing a car. Firefighters arrived at 2415 S. 10th Ave. about 2:45 p.m. Wednesday to find the garage fully ablaze, said Capt. Jeff Pfaff of the Yakima Fire Department.
