Firefighters are work to douse flames at Port of Pasco fire

Wooden pallets burned at the Port of Pasco sending plumes of smoke into the air Saturday afternoon. Pasco police said the fire was at Columbia Pallet on Ainsworth Avenue near Southeast Road 33. No injuries have been reported in the fire, which was reported at 2:15 p.m. But Pasco Fire Battalion Chief Dave Hare said one firefighter complained of heat exhaustion and was treated on the scene.

Ferry County: Stickpin Fire grows to 12,500 acres; Voluntary evacuations in place

Fire crews say the Stickpin Fire significantly grew overnight and has now burned approximately 12,500 acres. The Ferry County Sheriff's Office has issued Level 1 voluntary evacuations from Deer Boulder Creek Road south to the North Saint Peters Creek, Upper Long Alex Creek and Lambert Creek drainages.

Lightning-sparked wildfires force evacuations in Chelan County

Lightning-sparked fires are forcing some evacuations in Chelan County. Chelan County Emergency Management posted on Facebook that there are mandatory Level 3 evacuations on Little Butte Road. Level 2 evacuations, in which residents are prompted to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice, are being issued for all the canyons off Chelan Butte road.

41-year sentence set aside in Detroit firefighter's death

A man convicted in an arson that killed a Detroit firefighter will be returning to court for his sentence — for a third time. The Michigan appeals court threw out Mario Willis’ 41-year prison sentence Wednesday and took a Wayne County judge off the case. Willis was accused of paying a handyman $20 to burn down his girlfriend’s abandoned house in 2008.

NM Supreme Court sides with Albuquerque in battle against firefighter elected to state office

The New Mexico Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a city of Albuquerque rule that prevents city employees from running for office. Earlier this year, Emily Kane, an Albuquerque fire captain with more than 20 years of experience, successfully proved in district court that the city was wrong to essentially force her to choose between her career and her desire to run for state legislature.
