Firefighters say they have a line around the 130 acres, lightning sparked Cheney Plaza Fire. It broke out Sunday afternoon about a half mile southeast of the Turnbull Wild Refuge. Fire officials say about 155 people were working the fire. Firefighter Mike McKinley was one of those who raced to stop the fire.

Allegations of racial discrimination against African-American cadets at the Erie County Fire Training Academy in Cheektowaga prompted members of two community organizations to confront officials at the facility on Friday. A former Monroe County firefighter could be taken to court in a breach-of-contract suit over $5,247 in training costs. County legal staff asserts that Anthony Moore resigned May 15 from Monroe County Fire Rescue, seven months after he completed a training course funded by the county to become certified as a paramedic.
