Silver City (SD) VFD Receives $500,000 Donation, Plans New Fire Station

For the past six years, the north end of the Silver City (SD) Volunteer Fire District has been served out of a leased pole barn barely large enough to house one fire engine, RapidCityJournal.com reported. Thanks to a $500,000 donation awarded by the Pennington County Commission last Tuesday, it’s getting a new home.

The donation, part of a $2 million budget request made by the Pennington County Fire Administration last summer, will allow Silver City’s Station No. 2 in Merritt to move out of a situation that served a temporary need, but was never intended for long-term use, the report said.

The request included $500,000 for volunteer fire departments in Quinn, Scenic and Wasta, in addition to Silver City. Each of the four stations in need of replacement suffered from similar issues, the budget request stated. Among the inadequacies were rotting foundations, lack of space, cracked floors and vermin infestation, often hindering the departments’ ability to respond to fires and medical emergencies, the report said.

BWG Architects Designs Three New Stations, One Addition for Loveland (CO) Fire Rescue Authority

By Alan M. Petrillo

Loveland (CO) Fire Rescue Authority needed to add a fire station to cover population growth on the east side of its district in order to reduce response times into that area. Loveland turned to BWG Architects to design its new Station 10, since BWG had previously designed and built Stations 2 and 7, and put an addition on Station 6.

Station 10 has three double-deep, drive-through apparatus bays.

“Firefighter health and safety, and response efficiency are the two main components that we built Station 10 around,” says Greg Ward, Loveland’s division chief. “Station 10 has three double-deep, drive-through apparatus bays, with a public area on one side and the firefighter living quarters on the other.”

Loveland uses a linear yellow zone system for firefighter decon, moving from the apparatus bays toward the living area. The first section is a gross decon and decon laundry room.

Ward notes that Loveland is concerned about keeping particulates and carcinogens out of the living areas of its fire stations, so before it went to design on Station 10, Loveland crews toured fire stations around Colorado and in the Denver metropolitan area to see how other fire departments were handling decon in their stations.

Greater Eagle (CO) Fire District Embarks on $2.8M Station Remodel

In November, FCI Constructors Inc. broke ground on a $2.8 million, six-month project to remodel the Greater Eagle Fire Protection District Fire Station 9, VailDaily.com reported.

The station, which will be operational during construction, is getting a facelift and will be more welcoming to the community, according to the report. It also aims to adhere to best-known health practices for fire stations, the report said.

A fire official said the renovation is long overdue, explaining that the station, which was built in 1977, originally served as a garage for volunteer engines, the report said.

Experts recommend fire stations be sectioned into three hazard zones — hot, warm and cold — which Fire Station 9 will comply with once the remodel is complete, the report said. There will be structural separations between contaminated materials, working and living spaces in order to reduce exposure to cancer-causing chemicals, according to the report.
