Orleans (MA) Fire Department and some town officials think a new fire station is in order and are eyeing land owned by the Nauset Regional School District as a possible site, according to a report published by WICKEDLOCAL.com.

The town hasn’t committed to a building a new fire station, but did appropriate $100,000 to help decide to whether to renovate or build on to the current structure.

The town’s architectural consultant said the cost of bringing the current station up to code, as well as the cost of the temporary structure might cost more than building a new fire station, the report stated.

The selectboard members agreed to research expanding the feasibility study to see whether the funds could be allocated for designing and building a new fire station, according to the report, which also stated that there remains $48,000 in the original appropriation.

The site under consideration at the school might not be as readily available as thought as the report indicates there is a lot for the school district to consider.

Taking out two to three acres from the school site would require relocations of playing fields and the reduction of the overall space in which sports could be played, the report said.

Although the Orleans selectboard doesn’t have money to build a new fire station yet, or even to design one, the selectboard members agreed to start talking to the school district to see if there was any room for negotiations on the land.

With representatives on the school district board from Brewster, Eastham, Wellfleet, as well as Orleans, the board will have the first say in what happens to the land, the news report says.

Firefighters with the Calera (OK) Fire Department are working to restore a retired rescue truck, known as “The Spirit of Oklahoma,” that was donated to the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) after the 9-11 attacks destroyed apparatus, according to a report published by Fox 23.

The Calera firefighters are restoring the apparatus to become a memorial fire truck to honor first responders who died in the attacks, the television station reported.

FDNY lost two rescue trucks during the 2001 attacks and former Oklahoma City Fire Chief John Hansen decided to build a new truck to donate to New York City, the television station reported. Oklahoma school students raised about 80 percent of the funds to buy the new truck which was in service by May 2002, Fox23 reported.

After years of service in the city, the apparatus met the mandatory retirement age and its days of serving New York City were done, the station reported, adding that the truck was auctioned off and traded hands a couple of times before the Calera firefighters decided to contact the last owner with the intent of buying it.

Once the deal was sealed, the truck was transported back to Oklahoma and is now undergoing restoration in Calera, the television station reported, adding that once it is completed, it will be displayed at the Tulsa Fire Museum where it will be come a centerpiece displayed in a glass structure.

Following a groundbreaking earlier this year, Florosa (FL) Fire Control District’s new station is “coming along nicely,” the department wrote on Facebook.

The new $6.5 million facility will be larger, more storm-hardy, and more centrally located than the existing station. It’s expected to be completed early next year.
