National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Releases 2020 Annual Impact Report

Foundation looks ahead to 2021

Emmitsburg, MD (April 5, 2021) – The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is pleased to present its 2020 Annual Impact Report. This year’s impact report outlines how, through your support, we’ve been able to continue our efforts to honor and remember America’s fallen fire heroes, assist their families, and to reduce firefighter line-of-duty deaths and injuries.

Congress created the 501(c)(3) non-profit NFFF in 1992, located in Emmitsburg, Maryland, the home of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial. The Foundation relies on support from caring individuals, organizations, and corporations, to support programs such as the Fire Hero Family Network, the Hal Bruno Camps for Kids, Fire Hero Family Wellness Conference, Peer Support, Scholarship Programs, the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, and the Everyone Goes Home® program.

While COVID-19 may have restricted the NFFF’s ability to carry out its programs in-person in 2020, the Foundation’s pursuit of its mission never waned. Virtual gatherings replaced in-person events and the Foundation continued to serve our Fire Hero Families and firefighters.

COVID-19 caused some interruption in our fundraising efforts, but the continued support of our corporate partners, donors, and volunteers, helped us to continue to fulfill our mission. Your compassion, dedication, and commitment to our nation’s firefighters and the families of our fallen is valued not only by the Foundation, but the families and firefighters we serve.

The NFFF will continue to carry out its mission in 2021, we stand ready to respond to the challenges ahead. Moreover, the Foundation will continue to assist the families of our fallen firefighters and the fire service.

Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Chicago (IL) Fire Department Ambulance

Early Monday morning an alleged drunk driver hit a vacant Chicago Fire Department ambulance with his SUV and fled the scene, according to a report from The Chicago Tribune.

Around 2:40 a.m. officers were called to the 7600 block of South Crandon Ave. in the South Shore neighborhood, the report said. It was then determined that a 35-year-old man had “struck an unoccupied CFD ambulance” while driving south on Crandon Ave.

The driver wasn’t injured, the crew was responding to a call at the time, and the damage was minimal, according to Larry Merritt, a spokesman for CFD. Merritt added that the accident didn’t take the vehicle out of service.

“They tried to squeeze past an engine and an ambulance, and they scratched the side of the ambulance,” Merritt said. “It was not like it slammed into the side of the ambulance at a high speed; they were trying to go around and clipped it.”

The man drove away in his Dodge Journey without stopping after hitting the ambulance, authorities said.

“The driver fled the scene eastbound on 76th,” police spokeswoman Kellie Bartoli wrote in an email. “Responding officers located the vehicle and its driver in the 7500 block of South Essex.”

When police caught up with the man, they suspected he was under the influence of alcohol, according to the report.

“Charges and citations [for traffic violations] are pending,” Bartoli wrote.

Texarkana Borrows Pumper Truck From AR Counterparts

With half of its firefighting vehicles under repair at once, the Texarkana (TX) Fire Department has borrowed a reserve pumper truck from its neighbors on the Arkansas side, according to a report from Arkansas Online.

Myriad mechanical issues—such as brake problems and a malfunctioning motor—have shrunk the Texarkana FD’s fleet of eight trucks, five front-line vehicles and three reserve, to four that are operable, Texas-side Fire Chief Eric Schlotter said.

The Arkansas collective is left with two of its normal three reserve trucks, one of which itself needs work, the report said.

“That is kind of thin, but it’s not so thin that I wouldn’t help them out when we can, because you never know when we might have to reciprocate,” Arkansas-side Fire Chief David Fletcher said.

The Texarkana FD is fully operational, with all five fire stations staffed and ready to respond to emergencies, and residents will not see a difference in service, Schlotter said.

The situation is somewhat unusual but not unheard of, both chiefs said. Schlotter said the situation was a matter of bad timing and noted that keeping such complex, heavy-duty vehicles in good repair is a continuous challenge.

“This isn’t the first time that things kind of stacked up on us,” he said. “It always seems like Murphy’s Law, if it’s ever going to really jump on us, it’s with fleet issues. Every fire department fleet that I know of deals with the same issues.”

When the Texas department’s trucks will be repaired is uncertain.

“It’s not something we would prefer to happen,” Schlotter said. “We certainly don’t like it when we’re in this situation, but it is nice that we have partners, and it’s why we maintain those agreements with all those partners. Our strength is a collective one. We’re stronger because we have these partnerships with these other cities and agencies.”

3M™ Scott™ Fire & Safety Introduces A New Way to Communicate on The Fireground

Monroe, NC (April 6, 2021) – 3M Scott Fire & Safety, a global leader in respiratory protection and thermal imaging solutions, proudly announces its latest facepiece solution to help firefighters communicate clearly and hear what matters, the 3M™ Scott™ Vision C5 Facepiece with Radio Direct Interface.

Designed using a platform approach, the Vision C5 facepiece with radio direct interface incorporates the latest technology to enhance situational intelligence in a customizable solution. Expanding on the 3M™ Scott™ Vision C5 Facepiece with E-Z Flo C5 Regulator, the facepiece now includes Bluetooth® communications to help address critical communication challenges on the fireground.

“Two of the biggest challenges in fireground operations are communications and accountability,” said Gary Silsby, application engineer and firefighter. “Firefighters’ ability to communicate clearly over the radio and hear incoming communications is paramount to successful fireground operations.”

Utilizing proprietary noise suppression algorithms, in combination with a facepiece-integrated microphone, Bluetooth® enabled in-mask communications provide enhanced voice intelligibility during two-way radio communications. An integrated bone conduction headphone assists firefighters with hearing and understanding of incoming radio communications.

“As an industry leader, our role at 3M Scott Fire & Safety is to provide innovative solutions to help improve the safety and accountability of first responders,” said John Graves, global product marketer. “Providing a modular facepiece with in-mask communications allows fire departments the flexibility to configure the best solution to meet their needs.”

The Vision C5 facepiece with radio direct interface operates with compatible 3M™ Scott™ Air-Pak™ SCBA, as well as compatible two-way radios. A perfect companion to the 3M™ Scott™ Air-Pak™ X3 Pro SCBA, the Vision C5 facepiece was designed to provide enhancements to five key areas – cleanability, comfort, connectivity, communications, and configurability – helping firefighters to see m
