HME Ahrens-Fox To Debut New Hybrid Electric Technology (HET™) Rescue At FDIC 2019

GRAND RAPIDS/WYOMING, MI—HME Ahrens-Fox will debut a new wet rescue apparatus powered by Hybrid Electrical Technology (HET) at FDIC 2019. Assembled on the advanced AF1 custom chassis, the Ahrens-Fox HET is a Heavy Rescue Variable Response Vehicle with water and pump features, representing a forward leap in advanced energy management.

The Ahrens-Fox HET features a fully integrated hybrid design, with operation beginning from the turn of the battery switch. The vehicle’s electrical system is backboned with an 18-kW high-voltage Lithium battery storage module. Low-voltage (12V DC) operation is provided with a continuous capability of 440 A of DC power. The motive engine is equipped with an 11-kW high voltage alternator to provide replenishment power during driving, and the motive engine starting system is energized by a 12-volt capacitor. Cab climate control is achieved with a high voltage air conditioning compressor and/or an 11-kW engine coolant heater. The interior of the cab is fitted with conventional heat and air conditioning units.

“The apparatus will arrive on scene, the motive engine shuts down, and the truck will continue to fully operate for 8-12 hours from the Lithium module”, said VP of Engineering Ken Lenz. “With the HET, HME Ahrens-Fox offers the first zero-emission fire apparatus available today.”

The Ahrens-Fox Heavy Rescue Variable Response Vehicle powered by HET will be 1 of 11 HME Ahrens-Fox apparatus showcased within three locations at FDIC, which is the industry’s leading apparatus and equipment showcase event, taking place April 8-13, 2019 at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
