Leesburg (FL) Commissioners Approve Fire Apparatus Purchase

The new engine will replace an existing 2003 Typhoon Pumper manufactured by E-One, which is based in Ocala. That engine, which is 15 years old, has high mileage and high hours of operation on it, which has led to increased maintenance costs, a memo from Purchasing Manager Mike Thornton and Fire Chief David Johnson states.

The new engine, like most pumpers, is a critical piece of equipment that will carry large quantities of fire hoses and nozzles, the memo says. It will have a 750-gallon plastic water tank that can be used for quick responses until connections with fire hydrants can be established. And it comes with a 2,000-gallon-per-minute Hale pump.

Antique Williamsport (PA) Fire Apparatus Remembered

The truck was used in Williamsport’s Station No. 4, then at the foot of Railway Street, from 1929 until an unknown year when it was sent to Station No. 5 in Newberry, said Ed Frey, of Warrensville, who brought the truck back from Missouri in 1992.

Eventually, the truck went to someone from the lower part of the state. From there it went to Connecticut, then Massachusettes, then Missouri, Frey recalled.

Finally, the owner in Missouri tried to send the truck home.

Charleston (WV) Opens Rebuilt Fire Station

The station will be staffed by five personnel with living quarters above the bay for those individuals. The crews will staff the station 24/7. Charleston Fire Chief Rob Sutler says the fire station is position to protect a large number of homes and lives.

“While we still had a crew dedicated for it, they were over on Lee Street,” Sutler recalled. “If it hadn’t been for the South Charleston Fire Department working with us to help protect the area, we couldn’t have had the level of protection we had while rebuilding the station.”

The new station will also feature an ambulance and EMT service, which hasn’t been there since 2004 when the building was judged structurally deficient in the ambulance bay.
