Houston Deliberates Purchase of Fire Apparatus

The talks come as  one truck is sidelined with mechanical issues, and the city said during a meeting on Monday it was unsure when a solution fix would be finalized. Earlier, the council authorized buying a computer that will aid in analyzing the problem. It also has an aerial truck and another vehicle that is rarely used. Previously, councils have set aside money monthly or sought passage of a sales tax to help with repayment. The last ballot issue came in 2006 when an eighth-cent sales tax passage helped finance the purchase of a $650,000 truck. The levy expired 10 years later.

Departments in OR, VT Receive Turnouts through the 2018 Globe Gear Giveaway

Globe by MSA

Thanks to Globe by MSA and DuPont Protection Solutions (DuPont), two more fire departments are each receiving four new sets of state-of-the-art turnout gear. Since 2012, the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) has annually partnered with Globe and DuPont to provide volunteer fire departments in need with new, state-of-the-art turnout gear to better protect our nation’s responders. The latest recipients are the Gardiner (OR) Rural Fire Department and the Salisbury (VT) Volunteer Fire Department.

Gardiner (OR) Rural Fire Department

Gardiner is a small community of 425 residents on the coast of Oregon. The department’s 10 firefighters make do with turnout gear that is nearly 20 years old and doesn’t comply with industry standards. The town papermill had supplied Gardiner’s firefighters with some gear, but the closing of the mill has left the department to rely solely on tax dollars. The department often hosts fundraising breakfasts and dinners to raise money but is unable to purchase new gear on its current budget.

“We are volunteers, we are here to serve and protect our residents and surrounding area, and we are dedicated to what we do,” said Chief John Swann. “Receiving the Globe gear will really help build morale amongst my crew and improve safety. Thank you very much for thinking of our [volunteer] departments.”

Salisbury (VT) Volunteer Fire Department

Located in the foothills of the Green Mountains in Vermont, the Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department protects 1,500 residents over 30 square miles. Only half of the department’s 20 firefighters have turnout gear at all. Those who do are wearing gear that is over 10 years old, making them unsafe according to national safety standards. The department has been working to improve operations and recently added additional certified Firefighter 1 responders to their roster. However, the department’s small budget is allocated towards insurance, fuel, and maintenance costs so is unable to cover the cost of gear for these members.

“The Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department has been serving our community with pride since 1970,” said Chief Ryan Emilio. “This grant will greatly help us on our path to success and firefighter safety!”

Additional Globe Gear Giveaway awards will be made monthly throughout 2018. Stay tuned to the NVFC web siteDispatch newsletter, and Facebook page, as well as the Globe Facebook page, for additional information and announcements regarding the Globe Gear Giveaway.

Euramco Group and bloom.CAPITAL Launch the XFDirect Independent Service Network in East Asia

Euramco Group has partnered with bloom.CAPITAL to launch XFDirect—an independent network of firefighting vehicle and equipment service shops throughout mainland China.

XFDirect, over the past 12 months, has completed pilot testing and has now formally launched operations of its mobile application-based case management software for users to quickly create service cases from their mobile device for their out of service equipment, in their own language, which instantly connects to well-equipped, OEM-trained service teams for fast response.

XFDirect’s combination of mobile app interface with brick-and-mortar service capabilities, in a regional market where equipment dealers are typically not capable of supporting what they sell, has already gained rapid acceptance among fire departments across the region and leading manufacturers throughout the world.

The user-centric design is a truly disruptive platform and fills large gaps in the market that have left most well-known US and European brands with poor reputations in the region due to their lack of or prohibitively expensive after-sales support. The XFDirect team is now focusing its efforts on expanding geographic coverage, investing in physical service capabilities for the higher-spec needs of SCBAs and hydraulics, and digitizing equipment inventory at fire departments in the areas in which we operate. The mission is to service all brands of complex fire and rescue equipment, including pumps, hydraulics, SCBAs, and the advanced electronics that are becoming more commonplace in the industry.
