Orange (MA) Fire Department Getting $47K from Federal Government

Orange (MA) Fire Department Getting $47K from Federal Government

The Orange Fire Department has received some help from the federal government to update life-saving equipment that is 30 years old. Congressman James McGovern (D-Worcester) was in town Thursday to announce more than $47,000 in funding from the Department of Homeland Security for the department.

The money from this federal grant will be used by the Orange Fire Department to replace their 30 year old hydraulic equipment known as the Jaws of Life. Its used to rescue people trapped inside their vehicles.

These hydraulic tools include cutters, spreaders, and rams. The new equipment will also benefit neighboring communities.

Evanston (IL) Fire Department Launches Fire Apparatus for Dive Team

The Evanston Fire Department has added another vehicle to its fleet -- a refurbished ambulance that's now being used as an equipment van for the dive rescue team. The conversion of the old Evanston ambulance was funded by the Foreign Fire Tax Board, at an estimated cost of $20,000.

Dive Rescue 21, now housed at Fire Station #1, went into service Wednesday.

"The goal was to design and build a vehicle, which would give divers the ability to get in the water faster and more efficiently. We accomplished our goal by using an old ambulance, which gives us a larger amount of space within the rear compartment and allows each of the nine divers to have their equipment in a constant state of readiness. When it comes to water emergencies, time is critical, and every second counts," said Fire Captain David Smrha.

Thief Targets Fremont (IN) Fire Station

A thief broke into a vending machine and took an emergency radio from a vehicle outside Fremont's fire station Tuesday night. The fire station published a post on Facebook Wednesday bringing attention to the robbery. On Thursday, Fremont police's chief deputy explained to NewsChannel 15 the significance of the property.

The money taken from the pop machine helps pay for firefighter uniforms, including shirts they wear while working in the community.

The emergency radio was used as a way for a firefighter to get to where he is needed to help. That firefighter was inside the station, just feet away, at the time working on one of the department’s trucks needed to be in use that night.

747 SuperTanker to Fight California Fires

A massive jet repurposed to make fire retardant or water drops on wildfires, nicknamed the 747 SuperTanker, could soon appear in the skies of California as it has received a contract from the state's firefighting department. Jim Wheeler, president and CEO of Global SuperTanker, which owns the airplane, announced the contract reached with Cal Fire on Monday.

The aircraft and its crew were also issued clearance cards by Cal Fire, Wheeler said, meaning inspections were passed.

It was not immediately clear when or where the converted Boeing 747 will make its appearance. In July, CBS News reported the plane remained grounded by the U.S. Forest Service as it had yet to receive a contract from the federal agency.
