Andover (MA) Fire Apparatus Gets Blessing

There's a new, blessed fire engine in town, and it's headed to the Ballardvale station. On Wednesday, Aug. 23, Engine 2 was blessed by Fr. Peter Gori of St. Augustine's church. Gori became a volunteer chaplain for the Fire Department earlier this summer, along with Reverend Jon Paul of the Free Christian Church.
"It's more the norm rather than the exception," said Fire Chief Michael Mansfield, referring to the blessing of fire trucks. "I'd been advocating for clergy to be involved with our organization for probably the last 10 years and finally we were able to get this to fruition. The impetus to bring in the chaplains was to have two people with the clergy have a better relationship with the men and women that are in the department.

No Arrests Yet After Charleston (WV) Ambulance Hit by Gunfire

Police are looking for a gunman after a Charleston ambulance was hit by gunfire Tuesday morning. Charleston Police say medics responded to a call around 2:50 a.m. for a man with leg pain near Central Avenue and Vine Street.
Police say after the ambulance arrived, shots rang out and that the person in need of medical attention ran and took cover. The ambulance also left the scene.

No one was injured in the attack.

"Brazen and reckless and dangerous," Lt. Steve Cooper, Chief of Detectives says. "Shocking that someone like a paramedic ... their sole task is to help people They risk life and limb every day."

San Diego (CA) Fire Station Rehab Nearly Done

Fire Station 17 is scheduled to be complete in late November. "It will be beautiful," said Sandra. "[It's] another gem in the community, like the police station." Sandra, 63, was referring to the almost-completed Fire Station 17 at 4206 Chamoune Avenue in City Heights.
This is San Diego’s busiest fire station, covering four square miles. In 2016, Fire Station 17 had 6530 responses from their temporary location at 4000 41st Street (across the street from Aibertos on University Avenue); 4673 were for emergency medical reasons and 434 were for fire-related calls.

The new construction cost about $11 million to build, which is part of the “$120 million ‘megabond’ whose proceeds will go toward fixing San Diego’s crumbling infrastructure,” as reported by NBC 7 San Diego in early 2014.

Flint (MI) Celebrates Re-Opening of Fire Station

The Flint Fire Department began staffing Station 8 on Sunday, Aug. 27, manning it with four-person crews working 24-hour shifts. Those crews serve as first responders for fires and medical emergencies in Flint south of Interstate 69 and Lippincott Boulevard.
A staffing shortfall forced the Flint Fire Department to shutter Station 8 in 2014. Afterward, crews from Station 1, in downtown Flint, took up the slack, with other stations responding as necessary.

With Station 8 back online, the department hopes to shave minutes off of response times in South Flint, said Sgt. Brody Dietzel, who was overseeing the station on Tuesday. "The response time is going to be drastically cut," he said. "Station One was getting ran to pieces."
