Developers Wanted for Old Fire Station in Kalamazoo (MI)

Kalamazoo wants developers to turn an unused public safety training facility into a destination at the south edge of downtown.
The city sent out a request for developer qualifications Wednesday -- opening a screening process for developers to rehabilitate Fire Station No. 1 at 116 W. Cedar St. The 60-year-old, 15,000-square-foot building was used as the fire marshal's office and a Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety training facility until it was transferred to the city's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority in 2009.

Redevelopment Project Manager Sarah Jo Shipley said the property has had interest from developers in the past, but no plans came to fruition. Around eight parties have contacted the city's Economic Development Department recently, which spurred the invitation.

County Approves Construction of Ogden (KS) Fire Station

Construction of a new Ogden fire station is set to begin after Riley County commissioners approved the project during their Thursday meeting. Commissioners unanimously approved a special use authorization request Thursday to build the 50-by-80-foot station where Skyway Drive and Riley Avenue intersect. Officials said trucks and equipment have become too much for the fire station at Ogden’s city hall.
The station will have three spaces for fire trucks and a room to house and train firefighters. The Ogden station is one of two the county is working on. The county also is trying to build a new Leonardville station. The two stations will cost $900,000. Riley County Fire Department officials plan to pay $100,000 up front and use a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the rest.

Clarksville (IN) Fire Station to Lower Exposure to Carcinogens

The town of Clarksville is investing more than $3 million to build a modern fire station in the south end, replacing the current 91-year-old facility and providing a safer environment from possible carcinogens. The new station will locate at the corner of Stansifer and Sherwood avenues - just across the street from the existing Fire Station No. 1.
The Clarksville Redevelopment Commission is expecting to buy a 1.5-acre vacant property next month for $190,000. The commission approved the more than $3 million budget for construction of the new station during its meeting this week.

" ... The anticipated population growth resulting from the South Clarksville Redevelopment Plan further justified the need for Fire Station No. 1 to be located on or near Stansifer Avenue," Clarksville Redevelopment Director Dylan Fisher said in an email. "Stansifer Avenue is central to the future population dispersion within District 1 and accessible from [Interstate] 65 in the event the crew at Fire Station must respond to a different district."
