Firefighters See Rise in Drivers Blocking Halifax (Canada) Fire Station Entrances

In an emergency every second counts, and Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) is urging motorists to not to block the entrances to the city's fire stations. "It has a very serious impact on our response," said deputy fire chief Roy Hollett on Monday.

As recently as Monday morning, the fire station on West Street had received a call to respond to an alarm, but a flatbed in a no-parking zone across the street had prevented the fire department’s aerial truck from making the turn out of the station - thus blocking it in until the driver returned five minutes later to move the vehicle.

Fairview Board Approves New Fire Truck Purchase

The City of Fairview Fire Department needs a new pumper truck and city commissioners moved to approve $426,000 in funding for the purchase. Fairview City Manager Scott Collins initially reported the heavy equipment need in a workshop prior to the commission's first meeting in September. "I know we have to have that equipment," stated Collins.

Fire Chief Scott Hughes said the new truck will allow them to retire a 24-year-old pumper housed at the Highway 96 North fire station.

He reported they have trouble finding parts for old one, the air is out, and it takes ten minutes for the air to build up in the brakes so they can get in route to calls.

“The plan is to sell that one, take 10-year-old pumper, that is our first responding one now, move it out as a secondary and use this one as first in service,” explained Hughes.

The department plans to purchase the pumper from a co-operative out of New Jersey, who will build the truck over 390 days with estimated delivery in late 2018 or early 2019.

Ceremony to "Push-In" New Newport Fire Truck

A "Push-In" ceremony is called for the new fire engine at the Newport Fire Department. Fire Chief Bill Darin announced that the ceremony would take place Tuesday at 9 a.m. to celebrate the 2017 Pierce Fire Engine. It was specifically designed and engineered to fit in Newport Fire Station #2 (171 Main Street in South Newport).

It replaces a 1989 engine and was purchased through a $500,000 FEMA grant. The city paid $23,809.

In a news release, the unit is described as a state-of-the-art engine, able to pump 1,500 gallons per minute, and holds 500 gallons of water.

The new truck is capable of providing advanced life support emergency medical services to Newport residents.

Chesley Fire Truck Donated to Nicaragua

With the help from local business owner Mark Davis (who actually purchased the truck from the Chesley Fire Department) an older fire truck has been donated to Operation Nicaragua, a group based out of Kamloops British Columbia, that provides life saving and firefighting equipment to the Central American nation.
