Next Stop for Antique Fire Truck? Home

Capt. Nicky Fullin and Lt. Darren Welch can't help but smile when they talk about retrieving a shiny red piece of Tisbury Fire Department history. A 1947 LaFrance pumper returned Wednesday night as the 6:45 M/V Nantucket ferry pulled into Vineyard Haven at 7:30 pm. to a waiting crowd.

The truck, purchased brand-new by military veterans in 1947, has been the apple of Tisbury’s eye for several years, and in a deal with the firefighters’ association at the Cotuit-Osterville-Marstons Mills (COMM) Fire Department, the homecoming was made possible.

New Fire Station is Miami Township's First New Facility in More Than 20 Years

MILFORD, Ohio -- It's been more than 20 years since Miami Township has gotten a new township facility, so Friday's a big day as the $2.9 million Fire Station 29 opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. The station at 5644 Sugar Camp Road will provide the eastern portion of the township with improved fire and EMS response capabilities.

The new station was built through the use of municipal bonds at a cost of $2.9 million and took just over one year to construct. Additional staffing for the facility was provided by the local community through a Safety Services Levy that passed in fall 2015. Kelly said this facility is state-of-the-art for Miami Township Fire and EMS and will serve the community for decades to come.

House Committee Approves FY2018 Homeland Security Spending Bill

On Tuesday, July 18th, the House Appropriations Committee approved legislation funding the Department of Homeland Security for Fiscal Year 2018.  The $44.3 billion spending bill represents a nearly $2 billion increase in spending for the Department compared to the current fiscal year.

The bill would fund the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant programs at $690 million, the same amount as the current fiscal year.  The United States Fire Administration (USFA) would receive a slight cut from $44 million for Fiscal Year 2017 to $43.41 million for Fiscal Year 2018.  The Urban Search and Rescue System (USAR) and the State Homeland Security Grant Program (SHSGP) would both be funded at essentially the same levels as the current fiscal year.  The Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) would receive $630 million, an increase of $25 million over the current fiscal year.

Earlier this year, the White House released a Fiscal Year 2018 budget proposal that recommend significant cuts to the USAR, SHSGP and UASI programs.
