Streamlight^® Inc., a leading manufacturer of high-performance lighting equipment, introduced a red version of its Siege^® AA ultra-compact lantern in support of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation^® (NFFF).  Created by the U.S. Congress in 1992, NFFF offers programs to honor fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers.

Streamlight will donate $2.00 from the purchase of each Red Siege AA to NFFF. The new lantern, the latest in the company’s line of “Lights for a Cause” flashlight products, features the NFFF logo on its globe.

The cordless Siege AA lantern uses easily sourced AA alkaline batteries. It is ideal for a wide variety of applications, such as for outdoor recreational activities, during power outages, or for lighting up a dark path. Featuring one white and two red LEDs, it provides five output modes and has a glare-reducing globe cover that makes it comfortable to use in close quarters. With the cover removed, the lantern also can be used to illuminate large areas, either by standing it upright or hanging it upside down using the light’s bottom D-ring.  Run times range from 7 hours (white LED on High) to 12 days (Red SOS LED).

The Red Siege AA has an MSRP of $52.44 and includes Streamlight’s Limited Lifetime Warranty.

The Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) Annual Apparatus Maintenance & Specification Symposium will celebrate its 30^th Anniversary in January 15-17, 2018, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The first symposium was created after a series of meetings initiated by the International Association of Fire Chiefs’ staff, fire chiefs, several state mechanics’ associations, and the Fire Apparatus Manufacturers Association to address issues concerning apparatus, maintenance and maintenance personnel.

In 1988, the first Apparatus Maintenance & Specification Symposium was held in Fort Worth, Texas, through the efforts of Fire Chief Larry McMillen, Fort Worth Fire Department, Bob Barraclough, Span Instruments, and Mary McCormack, International Society of Fire Service Instructors (ISFSI).

In 1989, after the Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) was established as a subsidiary of the ISFSI, the Apparatus Symposium was moved to a hotel on Sandlake Road in Orlando, Florida. The symposium was designed to be educational and limited to table tops, not exhibits. Topics covered a range from preventive maintenance efforts to issues of liability and new safety standards. As the conference grew, it moved to the Rosen Plaza hotel on International Drive. In 2013, the FDSOA headquarters were moved from Massachusetts to Michigan, and the Apparatus Symposium and the annual Safety Forum are co-located and held the same week, alternating between Orlando and Scottsdale, Arizona.

“Thirty years is a major accomplishment to sustain a very unique conference,” said Rich Marinucci, executive director for FDSOA. “Fire apparatus has changed significantly over the past 30 years and most importantly, the focus on safer apparatus for fire and EMS personnel. FDSOA is proud to continue to support improvements and education in safety.”

The 30^th FDSOA Annual Apparatus Maintenance & Specification Symposium will feature keynote speakers: Brad Pinsky, attorney and fire chief; Garry Briese, executive director, Colorado State Fire Chiefs; and Chief Bruce Varner (Ret.).

LION, a manufacturer of CBRN Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) suits, has achieved “Certified Status” by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Safety Act as of March, 2017.

LION CBRN PPE, is the only manufacturer to achieve this recognition by the DHS Safety Act.

Since 2011, LION’s CBRN products have qualified as “Designated Status.” However, “Certified Status” acknowledges that LION’s CBRN products are recognized by the DHS Science and Technology branch as having significant, and effective technology that has the potential to save lives in the event of a terrorist incident.

As part of the application process for upgraded status, LION had to demonstrate to the DHS auditors that their PPE has performed as expected during the PPE’s 10-year life cycle. Information gathered via customer surveys included how often the suits were worn, whether they were cleaned and put back into service, or if they had been retired. LION showcased accurate record keeping of the entire life cycle of the PPE from fabric, suit, end-user receipt, and use.

“LION has achieved Safety Act ‘Certified Status’ by listening to the voice of the customer, and designing suits that first responders want to wear,” said Diane Redden, Director of CBRN PPE and StationWear.

LION will hold certification until May 31, 2021.
