New Milford (NJ) Acquires Military Truck for Water Rescues

The borough Police Department recently acquired a free five-ton military truck that the chief says can be used for emergency shelter and high-water rescue in case of a flood.
The truck's cab and cargo box are air-conditioned and heated. It is also equipped with a generator and hard-shell container that expands to essentially triple in size.

Mayor Ann Subrizi estimated the truck's value to be $120,000. She said the truck had clocked about 4,000 miles.

In March, the Borough Council authorized the chief to register for the federal 1033 program, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. It allows surplus military equipment to be transferred to local police at no cost except shipping expenses.

Military Truck Becomes Forreston (TX) VFD Fire Apparatus

The Forreston Volunteer Fire Department is benefiting from an extreme makeover. A $20,000 cost share grant through the Texas A&M Forest Service Rural Volunteer Fire Department Assistance Program went to purchase a slip-on unit that was added to a Stewart Stevenson excess military truck.
A slip-on unit is a complete self-contained firefighting system designed for wildland firefighting as well as structure and automobile fires.

"Before now, the largest tank that we had was a 400-gallon capacity," said Forreston VFD Fire Chief Wes Curry. "This unit will allow us to stay out longer which will help with a quicker knock-down of a fire."

Converting military vehicles into firefighting machines help departments attain rugged trucks with maximum off-road capability, Forreston VFD's news release stated.
