New Bertie (NC) Ambulances Arrive

The nearly nine month effort by Bertie County to upgrade its Emergency Services 911 fleet finally rolled out here on Tuesday. Back in the spring of 2016, Bertie Emergency Services Director Mitch Cooper informed the County Commissioners regarding replacing some of the older ambulance units in the Bertie EMS fleet.
After some discussion that carried over to August and the new fiscal year, Bertie County began a discussion about working towards replacing old ambulances in the 911 fleet that had become cost prohibitive.

“We have been using ambulance vehicles that were purchased during the First Med bankruptcy, and used units purchased from various dealers,” said Bertie County Manager Scott Sauer at the time. “These units have gotten us through our initial startup, but are becoming more and more costly for the county to repair. We are also experiencing frequent breakdowns with these vehicles and are in desperate need of more reliable 911 ambulances.”

Torrington (CT) Man Turns Fire Apparatus into Hearst for Firefighters

A Torrington man turned a fire truck into a hearse to honor fallen firefighters after their deaths.
"One of the things I always wanted for myself when I take my last ride, and I'm not driving, is to ride on a fire pumper," says Jay Krause, who spent 25 years as a volunteer firefighter in Unionville.

He says he fell in love with fire trucks and firefighting as a child, and that he still feels a deep connection to the work even though he's retired. So he bought an old fire truck and outfitted it to carry a casket so that firefighters and paramedics can be carried on board during their funeral processions.

Burrville Donates Apparatus to Massachusetts Fire Department

TORRINGTON >> The Burrville Volunteer Fire Department recently donated a fire engine to a Massachusetts fire department, as the long-standing organization closes up shop. "Engine 47 and Squad 45 are in a new home. The apparatus departed the Burrville station for the final time this morning," wrote department representatives on the Burrville Facebook page earlier this month.

The engine and vehicle — a Ford SUV — mentioned in the post are “fully operational,” representatives said. A mini-pumper truck was also sent to the Tolland department, former Burrville Fire Chief Matthew Vogt said.

New Law Strips Millions from Fire Departments

Fire chiefs say House Bill 4 will make it harder for them to prepare yearly budgets AZTEC - San Juan County Fire Chief Craig Daugherty says a bill signed into law by Gov. Susana Martinez in January essentially stripped $1.68 million from the fire department.

House Bill 4 does two main things — it changes how state fire fund money is distributed and causes more than $78 million of law enforcement and fire suppression funding statewide to revert to the state general fund. In her message, Martinez said she was able to sign the bill because these cuts are one-time, nonrecurring transfers.
