Ford's 2018 F-150 Police Responder

Ford will now offer its beloved F-Series truck as a purpose-built police vehicle.

Powered by a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and Ford’s SelectShift 10-speed transmission, the 2018 F-150 Police Responder is the most powerful pursuit-rated police vehicle built to date, with a total output of 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque.

Marina del Ray (CA) Fire Station Makes Room for Women

Wearing a Wonder Woman headband to drive home her message, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn turned a routine board approval of upgrades to the Marina del Rey fire station into a principled stand for greater gender parity among the county's firefighters.

Los Angeles County Fire Station No. 110 on Admiralty Way will be getting a $900,000 remodel that includes new dorm rooms, lockers, fixtures, partitions and restroom facilities to fulfill Americans with Disabilities Act requirements and accommodate female firefighters.

The county will start looking for a project architect on Aug. 1, and a 10-month construction schedule is expected to begin in May or June of next year.

In the meantime, Hahn and her three female colleagues on the five-member county board — each of whom also donned Wonder Woman headbands during the July 11 board discussion — are pressuring county fire officials to redouble their efforts to recruit qualified female firefighters.

Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority Prepares for Plane Accident

Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority officials just dropped $807,000 on a piece of equipment they hope they never use. In a demonstration that simulated a response to a plane crash, the authority Thursday unveiled the Lehigh Valley International Airport's new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle.

Resembling the "Urban Assault Vehicle" from the 1981 movie "Stripes," the new firefighting apparatus is designed to quickly get help to a burning plane, even if it has skidded off the runway into difficult terrain.

"Airports don't have fire hydrants on the airfield, which means ARFF must rapidly transport the necessary water supply directly to an emergency and this top-of-the-line response vehicle further enhances the safety of our passengers," said Charles Everett, airport executive director.

Brockville (Canada) Fire Apparatus Now Teaching Tool

It’s put in its time in service of the community; now, this 20-year-old Brockville Fire Department war horse may dedicate the rest of its days to teaching.
