Provo (UT) First Motorized Fire Apparatus Turns 100

When Jack Hopkinson was a kid, he would hear Provo's first motorized fire engine driving by his house as it responded to incidents. He said the truck made a ring-a-ding-ding sound as it went tearing by. Over the years, he developed a friendship with three firemen in his neighborhood and a special interest in the fire engine.
That truck, a 1917 American LaFrance, is celebrating its 100th birthday this year. It's a milestone that might have gone unnoticed as the truck sat in a barn in Sun Valley, Idaho, if it weren't for Hopkinson, who found it there in the 1980s and worked to restore it.

These days the truck continues to "delight the hearts of children of all ages," as Hopkinson likes to say, when it makes its way through the Freedom Festival's Grand Parade and when it's on display for Pioneer Day at North Park.

But when Hopkinson found Old No. 1, the once-shiny red truck was in rough shape.

Lincoln (NE) Fire and Rescue to Receive New Fire Apparatus

Lincoln's first new fire trucks in seven years are being readied for service. The city took possession of the two new trucks in mid-June and will put the first one, Truck 7, in service on July 12 after a 2 p.m. ceremony. Truck 8 is expected to begin service Aug. 1.
The Lincoln Fire and Rescue Department has been getting the trucks ready “to hit the streets,” mounting tools, installing wiring for computers and setting up data terminals, said Division Chief Kendall Warnock.

The two trucks and three fire engines were purchased from Smeal Fire Apparatus Co., a Nebraska-based company, for $2.836 million. A bonding mechanism called Certificates of Participation, or CIPs, were used to finance the equipment and will be repaid with city tax receipts.

Richland (WA) Fire Apparatus Starts Fire on Interstate 82

A new Richland fire truck's engine blew up destroying the truck and sparking a fire along Interstate 82 Monday afternoon. The city purchased the truck about a month and a half ago, Battalion Chief Ron Duncan said. Before the fire department started using it, a firefighter drove it to a Dodge dealership in Hermiston for service.
Problems started at about 5 p.m on his return trip, when the motor blew up, Duncan said. The truck lost power and brakes before the firefighter pulled to the side of the interstate near milepost 116, a couple miles east of Finley.

The firefighter, who was traveling at normal highway speeds, did an amazing job stopping the truck, Duncan said.

Flames from the engine compartment traveled to the field along the right side of the road. Wind pushed the fire into the median as well.

Moneta Volunteer (VA) Fire Apparatus in Accident En Route to Call

A Moneta Volunteer Fire Department firetruck narrowly avoided smashing into a pickup truck while en route to a call. The firetruck was eastbound in about the 1900 block of Chestnut Fork Road, with its lights and siren activated, when the approaching pickup truck failed to yield to it.
The driver of the fire engine was forced to take evasive action to avoid striking the oncoming red Ford F-150 and ran off the right side of the road where there was about an 8-foot drop to a creek.

The firetruck stopped on the top edge of the embankment with its right-side tires over the edge. The F-150 stopped briefly but then continued on.
