Canton (OH) Reopens Closed Fire Stations

Firefighters spent the day Tuesday moving back into fire stations that have been closed for more than a year. At Station Number 5 on West Tuscarawas Street, an Engine Company returning to the building for the first time since January 21st of last year.
The same at Station Number 6 on the city's east side. Three stations re-opening as part of a plan to improve response times. But the plan does not increase the number of firefighters or their equipment, it simply shuffles the existing numbers, spreading them out over more locations.

"The benefit is somewhere in the city it will at least decrease our response times by some type of help arriving rather than have them cluster in the middle," said Canton Fire Chief Thomas Garra.

Kiel Fire Apparatus Now in Mexico

A pumper truck which was parked inside the Kiel Fire Station on Friday afternoon is now helping to fight fires in the city of Matamoros, Mexico.
Through the work and generosity of the Kiel Lions Club and other Lions throughout the district--along with the Kiel Fire Department--another fire truck has been donated to Mexico.

Bernard "Pat" Knier, missions coordinator for the Kiel Lions Club, said the club purchased the 1984 pumper from the KFD for $5,000. Kiel Fire Chief Bob Hennings said the funds will be used to purchase equipment to outfit the new 1,500 gallon per minute (gpm) pumper scheduled to arrive in September.

Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (MN) Buys Fire Apparatus

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) has purchased a state-of-the-art firetruck to more effectively fight fires, the tribe stated in a news release Wednesday. The new vehicle is a lightweight ladder truck with a compressed-air foam system that the tribe says is several times more effective in fighting fires than water alone.
"Our number one goal is to keep community members, guests and our neighbors safe," said Greg Hayes, director of Mdewakanton Public Safety, the tribe's full-time professional fire and ambulance service. The department will put the truck to use immediately.

Southampton (NY) Fire Department Raising Money to Restore 1912 Fire Apparatus

The Southampton Village Fire Department is raising money to make repairs to its century-old motorized ladder truck-the department's first. The truck, built by the Elmira manufacturer American LaFrance, was purchased by the department in 1912, a time when firefighters in the department were still using horse-drawn or hand-drawn apparatuses, explained firefighter Craig Raynor, who sits on the department's antique truck committee.
Over the years—with the help of Southampton resident Henry Austin Clark, a car collector and the founder of the now-defunct Long Island Automotive Museum, which had been located on County Road 39 near the intersection with Sandy Hollow Road in Southampton—the fire department rehabilitated and restored the truck while keeping it as close as possible to its condition when it first rolled into the village.
