Fire On Highland Park Fire Truck Could Be Weather Related

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ) - Who do you call when the vehicle you are in is on fire? That's a no-brainer Highland Park firefighters - they take the job on themselves. Fire Chief Kevin Coney says because of the high winds they were running non-stop all day to fires, downed power lines, grass fires and then the fire truck itself became one of the emergencies to address.

The truck was returning to its station after assisting the Detroit (MI) Fire Department at one of its 64 structure fires (Detroit: Nearly 200 Calls in One Day) when the ladder truck's driver noticed something was burning. He pulled the truck over, and the crew discovered a fire in the engine compartment.

Clinton Township (MI) Upgrades Public Safety, Civic Center Security

Clinton Township officials recently took steps to increase public safety in the police-fire ranks as well as the Civic Center. The Board of Trustees Monday approved spending $972,800 for a 109-foot-long Rosenbauer Viper fire ladder truck. Township officials had budgeted $1 million for the vehicle.

New Fire Stations Could Be Costly Mistake for San Diego (CA)

Eight months after shelving a plan to build 18 new fire stations, the San Diego City Council is reviewing other recommendations to improve fire coverage.
In this editorial, the news organization takes a look at previous and current recommendations for how the fire department can improve public safety in San Diego, California. The editorial espouses using quick-response squads and adding engine companies during peak response times vs. adding stations. Eight months ago, the fire department scrapped a plan to build 18 new stations. A recent recommendation from an outside consultant suggests 10 new stations and adding more quick-response units.
