Fire Truck Wreck

During Prairieton Fire Department's response to the S&G maintenance barn fire, one fire man drove a truck off the road along South Morris Place north of Prairieton Road hitting a power line.

"Everyone is OK, he was stuck in the vehicle for a while until they got the power shut down. All he lost was his pride," Fire chief Mike Chervenko said.

Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department Purchases Computers with Grant

VALPARAISO - The Liberty Township Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a Community Fund Grant from the Porter County Community Foundation. The grant funding allowed them to purchase four Panasonic Toughbook Computers. The new electronics will be securely placed in each of the department's trucks, enhancing communication with the dispatch center and surrounding agencies.

These computers are capable of adapting to enhancements in the County’s 9-1-1 dispatch system and will help the fire department fulfill its mission to protect life, property and the environment.

Sparta Village, Township at Odds Over Purchase of New Aerial Fire Truck

The purchase may be good for the Sparta Fire Department in the short term as the truck would replace the department's aging aerial truck. But long term, the purchase may have political ramifications. 

The 4-3 split vote on the proposal to purchase the 2014 aerial truck was another indication of the growing rift between the township and village. All four township members voted to approve the purchase while the three village representatives voted against it.

The township can now move to finance the two-year-old reconditioned truck on its own if township officials choose.
