A Look Inside Palo Alto Fire Apparatus

It's powered by a 12.8-liter six-cylinder diesel with 500 hp and 1,650 lb-ft of torque. There's a 65-gallon fuel tank mounted at the rear of the chassis. It has a seating capacity for five in the cabin and a ladder that extends to a nominal height of 100 feet above the ground. In case you somehow haven't figured this out, we're describing a fire truck. And thanks to the Palo Alto Fire Department in Stanford, California, we were given the exclusive opportunity to check out this Pierce 100' Arrow XT Tractor Drawn Aerial for our latest unboxing review.

Other features include a stabilizer system consisting of two hydraulically operated out and down style stabilizers, essentially vertical jack cylinders that are capable of 12-inch ground penetration, and the polished stainless steel front bumper features a couple of portable winch receivers, each one rated at 9,000 pounds. Join us and firefighter Matt Goglio as he explains many more of this fire truck’s insanely cool features and accessories.

Custom-Built University of Chicago Medicine Ambulance May be Look at Future

It's wider and taller than a standard ambulance and can fit more people inside. It comes equipped with landing gear so the emergency crew can hop out and assist with an emergency medical helicopter landing in the event that a helipad is not available. And it's got Google Glass, Wi-Fi, GPS navigation and satellite tracking, which allow staff to operate like an on-the-go intensive care unit and assist with the most critical and complex cases.

This is what an ambulance of the future looks like. On display through Feb. 20 at the Chicago Auto Show, the 2017 Ford E-450 Type III Ambulance was custom-crafted for the University of Chicago Medical Center by Ford Motor in tandem with Skokie-based ambulance provider MedEx. It was designed to bridge the hospital's air and ground transport system--the reason for such bells and whistles as landing gear and Google Glass. This is especially important for patients who require both air and ground transport.
