Crookston Fire Department Buys 2002 Truck to Replace 40-Year-Old One

250K price tag is $150K less than what CFD was budgeting for purchase in 2018 At a special meeting this week, the Crookston City Council approved the Crookston Fire Department's planned purchase of a 2002 platform truck to replace its 40-year old aerial ladder truck.

The CFD sets aside money every year for future truck purchases, and was anticipating the purchase of a similar truck in 2018, at an estimated cost of $400,000. But when the CFD's Dan Crane came across the 2002 American LaFrance 93-foot Platform truck while surfing the web and saw it was available for $250,000, the CFD jumped at the opportunity.

The CFD has one of only two aerial ladder/platform trucks in Polk County, and the 2002 truck has a ladder than extends eight feet longer than the CFD's current, 1977 truck.

Flames Gut Mooretown Fire Station Office

Oroville >> A fire Tuesday evening south of Oroville ripped through an office building for the Mooretown Rancheria Fire Department. The building, a double-wide trailer that was used as office space for the department's captains, was described as a total loss, Mooretown Fire Chief Ray Ruiz said.

Computers, radio equipment and training materials inside were destroyed by the flames.

The department’s main office, engine bay and maintenance shop were spared, Ruiz said.

The tribal Fire Department, which is located near Feather Falls Casino, isn’t staffed at night, he said. No one was hurt.

“We’re all OK,” the fire chief said. “We’re bummed about what happened. It’s almost like somebody coming in your house and ripping you off. You feel like you’ve been violated. That’s the way we feel, too. This is not supposed to happen in a fire station.”

A tribal enforcement officer patrolling the area discovered smoke rising from the back of the office building about 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, Ruiz said. The officer then saw flames in a heating and air-conditioning unit and grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher while notifying casino officials to call 9-1-1.

Bernardston Fire Station Committee Hopes to Negotiate Lower Prices

BERNARDSTON - After receiving costly preliminary estimates for building a new fire station at two prospective sites, the Fire Station Expansion Committee hopes to negotiate lower property prices. During a Tuesday meeting, the committee reviewed an order of magnitude cost table submitted by Brattleboro engineering and architecture firm Stevens & Associates.

The firm compared the 1 Brattleboro Road lot, which could possibly be combined with a lot at 12 Church St., and the 23 Kringle Drive property.

The firm estimated the total project cost at 23 Kringle Drive would be $3,801,000, just $68,000 more than the total project cost at 1 Brattleboro Road and 12 Church St., which would be $3,733,000. However, the actual costs could vary significantly, as much as 30 percent more or less.

Originally, the committee had just been comparing the 1 Brattleboro Road property with the 23 Kringle Drive property. Land acquisition costs vary drastically, with the 1.28-acre Brattleboro Road lot costing $178,500 and the 5.62-acre Kringle Drive lot costing $709,000, once closing costs are factored in.

However, Bernardston Fire Chief Peter Shedd said that if the committee decided on the Brattleboro Road property, and still needed more land, Bernardston resident Frank “Bud” Foster would be willing to donate his property at 12 Church St. Foster confirmed this, though no decision has been made yet concerning the property, where Foster said he also rents space to two families.

Fire Department purchases state-of-the-art fire truck

Later this month, firefighters will have a new resource to tackle emergencies - a state-of-the-art truck. The $635,000 purchase was a year in the making for the St. Joseph Fire Department.

“This truck has a roll-and-go, meaning it can roll and pump water at the same time, so if you had a building collapse, or something of that nature, and you had to move the truck, they could do so without affecting the firemen that are using hoses off this truck,” said Mike Neylon, the fire department’s chief training officer.

Neylon said the truck features an aerial ladder that allows fire crews to quickly reach a building story or roof instead of using a ground ladder. He also said a flip of a switch can move the ladder upward and the outrigger is easier to deploy.

“An outrigger is a stabilizing system that we hydraulically put out to the sides of this vehicle to stabilize it from tipping,” Neylon said.
