Hotel's Gingerbread House (WI) Pays Homage to Historic Firehouse

The east side Holiday Inn is once again honoring a local building with a sweet confection. In partnership with the Portage Co. Historical Society, the hotel is paying tribute to the oldest-surviving municipal building — Historic Firehouse No. 2. For the fifth consecutive year, the hotel’s gingerbread house is on display for visitors and guests at the Stevens Point Holiday Inn Hotel & Convention Center, 1001 Amber Avenue.
The gingerbread house is more than five-and-a-half feet tall, six-and-a-half feet long and just over 30 inches wide. According to the Amber Grill’s Chief Matthew, the house was made with more than 150 pounds of flour, four gallons of molasses and 20 pounds of egg whites.

The Central Wisconsin Model Railroaders Club has also donated the use of a model train for the display.

The final firehouse creation was a cooperative effort between the hotel’s engineering, maintenance and housekeeping staff, as well as the kitchen crew and some guests.

The firehouse — Historic Firehouse No. 2 — was first constructed in 1885. The building initially included four bedrooms, a hayloft and an engine room, where a team of horses and a pump engine were kept. The building was sold to the Historical Society for $1 in 2005.

Strongsville (OH) Fire Station Renovation Costs have Risen by 12 Percent

The cost of renovating the city's Albion Road fire station has risen by more than 12 percent since the project started this summer. Earlier this year, City Council hired Seitz Builders Inc. in Broadview Heights to repair and renovate the Albion station, one of four fire stations in town, at a cost of $586,900.
As of last week, the cost has climbed to $659,000. Council has approved 11 change orders for the project.

Fire Chief Jack Draves said the unexpected and additional costs aren't surprising, considering the station was built in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

"The construction methods and materials are different (today), and it makes sense to upgrade to more-efficient appliances and equipment," Draves said in an email to cleveland.com. "As with any remodeling project, there are many hidden issues and they are not discovered until you get into the project."

Seitz's low bid - and the potential for change orders that would drive up costs - was a concern of some council members in July, before council accepted Seitz's bid. The other five bids ranged from $611,700 to $842,780.
