Firefighters Encouraged to Register for 2nd Annual National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters

NFFF Stair Climbs

When firefighters die in the line of duty, the entire fire service grieves. We look for ways to make sure their lives and their sacrifices are honored. We also want to ensure that the families, departments, and friends of the fallen find comfort and resources they need to rebuild their lives.

On October 1st, join hundreds of other firefighters in New York to honor the fallen.

“Every day, here in New York City and across the country, firefighters go into harm’s way, through every obstacle and climbing every step needed to accomplish their life-saving mission,” said Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “The FDNY is proud to take part in this fitting tribute to every firefighter who has made the supreme sacrifice and to lend our support to the families they left behind.”

Firefighters will climb the equivalent of 110 stories to symbolize the number of floors in the Twin Towers. Fifteen years after the September 11th attacks, we will honor the 343 firefighters from FDNY, the 37 Port Authority Police officers, and the 23 NYPD officers who died that day.

“The National Stair Climb for Fallen Firefighters is a journey of hope, raising funds to help programs for surviving relatives of firefighters across the country,” said Chief Ronald J. Siarnicki, Executive Director of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF). “Approximately 80 firefighters die in the line of duty each year in the U.S. and this is a way to let the families know they and their firefighters are not forgotten.”

The stair climb is a family event and we encourage you to bring your spouses and children to climb with you. Your donation benefits the FDNY Counseling Services Unit and the NFFF.

Mike Coffey, a Tarrytown (NY) firefighter participated in the 2015 climb in memory of Firefighter John Kelly, who died during a technical rescue incident on September 6, 2010. “The NFFF does great deeds all the time, so raising money for it as well as FDNY counseling services seemed like the right thing to do,” he said.

All climbers will receive a t-shirt and a name badge for the firefighter they are honoring.  Other special recognitions and an after party are planned for the participants. Early registration is $35 and is available until August 31st.  For more information and to register, go to www.nationalstairclimb.org

Oshkosh Delivers Its 100th Snozzle High-Reach Extendable Turret

OSHKOSH, WI—Oshkosh Airport Products LLC, an Oshkosh Corporation company, has delivered an Oshkosh® Striker® 6x6 aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) vehicle equipped with a Snozzle® high-reach extendable turret (HRET) to Tucson International Airport in Tucson, Arizona. The delivery represents the 100th Snozzle sold since Oshkosh acquired this product line.

Oshkosh Airport Products has delivered an Oshkosh Striker 6x6 equipped with a Snozzle High-Reach Extendable Turret (HRET) to Tucson International Airport in Tucson, Arizona. The delivery represents the 100th Snozzle HRET sold since Oshkosh acquired the brand in 2011.

“The Oshkosh-exclusive Snozzle sets the industry standard, and we’re really proud to place our 100th Snozzle-equipped apparatus on duty with Tucson International Airport,” says Jeff Resch, Oshkosh Airport Products Group vice president and general manager. “The Snozzle continues to gain new customers beyond aircraft rescue and firefighting—including municipal fire departments, mining operations, oilfield and petrochemical plants, and other applications—where its many benefits enhance performance while keeping firefighters further away from danger.”

"Safety is a top priority for the Tucson Airport Authority (TAA),” says Bonnie Allin, Tucson Airport Authority president/CEO. “Having the right equipment for our public safety personnel is critical, particularly when it comes to our aircraft rescue and firefighting trucks. We're excited to welcome the new truck to TAA's Fire Department."

The Oshkosh Snozzle is available on the Striker’s full range of 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 models, as well as on Pierce custom chassis. The Snozzle features a hardened carbide steel tip, a perforated nozzle, and a forward-looking infrared camera. The device enables firefighters to discharge from 20 feet below grade to elevations as high as 65 feet.

Oshkosh continues to invest in the Snozzle HRET. Recent advancements include integrating the electronic control system for easier troubleshooting, faster servicing, and enhanced reliability. The piercing steel tip now offers an updated hydraulic rotary actuator, an increased range of motion (up to 280º), longer piercing depth, and a decreased overall width for better visibility. Inside the cab, a new control module feature simplifies operator controls and provides smoother operation.

The Striker 6x6 for Tucson International Airport is equipped with a 697-hp engine, a seven-speed automatic transmission, and Oshkosh TAK-4® all wheel and fully independent suspension for a smooth ride and off-road capabilities. The firefighting system includes a 50-foot Snozzle, an electric joystick-controlled 300-gpm front bumper turret, a3,000-gallon water tank, a 420-gallon foam cell, and a 550-poun

Cops: Teen in RV Hits Gwinnett (GA) Fire Apparatus

A Gwinnett County teenager had to be apprehended via K9 Sunday after driving an RV into a fire truck, police said.
Gwinnett police spokesman Cpl. Collin Flynn said the 17-year-old Lilburn resident -- who did not have a driver's license -- was driving the RV on Five Forks-Trickum Road when he "struck the rear of a passenger car in front of him."

"After that collision, [he] traveled into the next lane of travel and struck a Gwinnett County fire truck," Flynn wrote in a news release.

The teen drove away but was followed by a witness. Police officers soon found the RV too, and the teenager tried to run away.

"Officers set up a perimeter and [the suspect] was apprehended with the assistance of a K9 unit," Flynn said.

Photos taken by the police department showed significant damage to both the RV and fire truck, but no injuries were reported in that collision. The driver of the first vehicle hit by the RV was taken to Eastside Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Flynn said.
