KME, a member of REV Group, has announced that the Los Angeles County (CA) Fire Department has awarded it an order for 20 custom pumpers. The purchase includes a contract provision for fire departments nationwide that allows them to “tag-on” to the contract and take advantage of the discounted pricing until December 31, 2016. The apparatus will be built on KME’s Severe Service™ cab and chassis. The pumpers have 500-hp engines and air ride rear suspensions for improved vehicle ride and handling. The pumping systems feature 1,500-gpm midship pumps and 250-gpm auxiliary pumps for pump-and-roll operations. The trucks feature 500-gallon water tanks and 25-gallon Class A foam tanks. Each apparatus is equipped with a KME Lock-N-Load™ hosebed cover.

AMKUS RESCUE SYSTEMS has announced its intent to acquire 911 Tools, a U.S. vehicle stabilization equipment and lifting systems manufacturer. The 911 Tools rescue strut product line, which is marketed under the RescueStrut brand name, includes accessories that allow emergency responders to transform vehicle stabilization struts into other life-saving rescue tools such as manual hydraulic rams and shoring struts, as well as tripod, bi-pod, and mono-pole adapters for use in rope rescue scenarios. The RescueStrut line of equipment will be marketed under the AMKUS brand and distributed by AMKUS and 911 Tool distributors within their existing territories.

SAFE FLEET has announced a number of new hires. Each new associate will be focusing on the Safe Fleet Emergency Market brands: Elkhart Brass, ROM, FoamPro, and FRC. Jay White, a former Los Angeles (CA) firefighter, joined Safe Fleet as the western regional sales manager. His territory includes Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Dean Hutt joins Safe Fleet as midwest regional sales manager. His territory includes Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Houston, Texas Station 84, designed by Brown Reynolds and Watford, received high praise from the F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Awards Program for its strong “street presence” in an area of competing buildings. There is no doubt that it is a fire station and a stationary “machine” designed to house fire apparatus and turn out firefighters and their mobile equipment quickly. The exterior skin of the building is an astute blend of durable materials carefully combined to call attention to the pubic entrance and give a sense of individual identity to the various functional blocks of the building.

Oregon became the first state in the country in 1989 to create a statewide regional hazmat emergency response system.

Since that time, it has provided the funding for the apparatus used by 13 hazmat teams across the state. The teams consist of career and volunteer firefighters, with some law enforcement and public works employees.

As part of its vehicle replacement cycle, the State Fire Marshal’s Office awarded a 10-year contract to Pierce Manufacturing Inc. to build 10 heavy rescue hazmat vehicles-two vehicles every two years. The first two hazmat rigs were delivered in December 2015 to Hermiston Fire and Emergency Services and in January 2016 to the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department.

Future deliveries are yet to be determined as to location but will be chosen from the Roseburg Fire Department, the Gresham/Multnomah County Fire Department, Klamath County Fire District No. 1, Linn/Benton (Albany Fire Department, Corvallis Fire Department, and Lebanon Fire District), the Portland Fire and Rescue Bureau, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, the Salem Fire Department, Ontario Fire and Rescue, and the Coos Bay Fire Department.

Chad Hawkins, hazmat rail coordinator for the State Fire Marshal’s Office, says all 10 vehicles are standardized in terms of design, what they carry, and location of equipment. “If we have mutual-aid incidents,” he points out, “we want the vehicles to be fully interoperable.”

The heavy rescue hazmat rig is built on a Pierce Enforcer™ chassis with a 70-inch walk-through cab and a 24-inch raised roof on a 23-foot-long, 96-inch-wide, heavy-duty aluminum body. The cab seats six firefighters and has a 144-inch walk-in storage area behind it, accessed by an officer-side door with an automatic pneumatic fold-down step. The walk-in area features a command desk with two forward-facing seats as well as a 79-inch slide-out module on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
