Newport Donates Fire Engine to Cocke County Volunteer Fire Department

A volunteer fire department in Cocke County got some unexpected help Monday when the Newport Fire Department donated one of their fire engine.

The truck is going to the Long Creek Volunteer Fire Department so they can better serve their community. The city of Newport says this is the first time they’ve donated a truck. It was taken out of service in 2006 but still works great.

Both departments say the city and county worked together to make this happen, and this is also Long Creek’s first diesel-powered truck.

“Both our other trucks, our tanker and our engine, are gas and we’re hoping it’ll help the community a little more,” said Joey Ailes Jr., Long Creek VFD Assistant Chief.

“It is nice to be able to help and it makes us feel good that somebody in Cocke County is going to be able to use this engine again,” said Newport Fire Cheif Randy Ragan.

Buying a new fire engine could have cost the volunteer fire department upwards of $10,000. They say this donation will help them save lives.

North Halifax Ecstatic Over New Fire Truck to Better Serve the Community

From a 1970s model to a brand new 2016 truck: The North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department is ecstatic it finally has an upgraded fire engine. It comes with a hefty price tag though, nearly $300,000. And just about all of the money will come from fundraisers.
The Board of Supervisors gave the department $45,000 towards the new truck after volunteers pleaded for help.

"It was just time," said Chief Ronnie Waller. "You try to figure on a fire truck maybe 20 years lifetime on it. We got many more years than 20 over this one."

"From a safety standpoint, upgrade and have the latest state of the art equipment that we can afford," said Board of Supervisor JT Davis.

The Board has agreed to give $150,000 a year to help the volunteer fire departments in the county. Each year, a committee decides which department gets part of the $150,000.

Kentucky Firefighter Trapped in Fire Apparatus After Collision with Car

A firefighter was reportedly trapped in the driver's seat of a fire truck after a crash at Man o' War Boulevard and Nichols Park Drive Monday afternoon. The firefighter was said to have minor injuries. Crews were called to the scene at 4:42 p.m., after the truck collided with a four-door passenger car that damaged the door of the fire truck, trapping the firefighter inside.
The firefighter had minor injuries, but the driver of the sedan was in critical condition, said police Lt. Andrew Daugherty. No other firefighters were injured.

The fire truck was responding to a call with lights and sirens when the wreck occurred after the intersection, Daugherty said.

The silver sedan on the outer loop of Man o’ War jumped the median and collided with Fire Engine 15 on the inner loop, Daugherty said. The truck hit the passenger side of the car, he said.
