Fire Department wants City to Expedite Purchase of New Brush Truck

The Fort St. John Fire Department is asking the city for a new brush truck in advance of wildfire season, and wants it quickly. Typically purchasing fire units would entail a call for proposals, but the fire department is asking the city to bypass that lengthy process, and purchase the unit they need from Safetek Emergency Vehicles in Abbotsford.

Brush trucks are more versatile than traditional fire trucks, and are used to fight brush and wildfires.

“The normal procurement process for acquiring a replacement unit typically spans up to two years, depending on the complexity of the unit,” according to a report Fire Chief Fred Burrows prepared for council.

“The 2016 wild land fire season is about to start and having a dependable unit in service would be ideal for the department to meet its responsibilities,” it reads.

The truck they hope to replace is 20 years old, a 1996 GMC 3500, and is past its service life, Burrows says.

“It’s requiring more regular maintenance in regards to things breaking,” he told the Alaska Highway News.

Funds to replace the unit have already been approved in the 2016 capital budget, which lists an expenditure limit of $200,000.

The unit the department hopes to secure, which they found after calling around to manufacturers in the Lower Mainland, would cost $195,596.
