Snyder (NE) and Smeal Build Fire Trucks and Aid Each Other

Steve Burger lives just four blocks from Smeal Fire Apparatus Co., but he and his 21-year-old son hop into their old beater and drive to work together five days a week. Like so many others around here, working at Smeal is practically in their blood, and they have no problem spending almost every hour of the day together.

Like so many others around here, working at Smeal is practically in their blood, and they have no problem spending almost every hour of the day together.

Burger has worked at the plant that makes fire trucks for 15 years. His brother works there, too. And his son, Chris, has been at the plant since he graduated.

“I just figured I’d get a good job right outside of high school and got comfy,” Chris Burger said.

The Smeal plant sits on the western edge of this village of 298 not far from Fremont, and it employs more people than that -- 313 on a given weekday -- in jobs ranging from the front offices to the production lines working on 45 to 60 firetrucks at a time.

City of Las Cruces (NM) Celebrates New Fire Apparatus

The City of Las Cruces Fire Department conducted a "pushing in" ceremony on Monday, March 28 for Engine 7, the City's newest fire engine. The $425,000 truck is stationed at Fire Station 7, 1050 Crawford Blvd., near the airport.
The new fire engine, a Spartan Gladiator Pumper, is capable of pumping 1,500 gallons of water per minute and is fully equipped for structural firefighting. Because the firefighters provide service for aircraft emergencies at the Las Cruces International Airport, the apparatus is also equipped with aircraft rescue firefighting gear in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration requirements.

The vehicle was paid for through the City’s Vehicle Acquisition Fund. The engine replaces the 1980s era tender that was providing service at the airport.

Mount Prospect (IL) Fire Apparatus Returns to Action

It was a busy first few days for Engine 13, operating again out of Mount Prospect's downtown fire station. The engine permanently reentered service at 8 a.m. Friday.
If the engine had remained permanently out of service, Fire Chief Brian Lambel said it would have caused more strain on the existing tower ladder truck. The department would have been forced to pull various life-saving apparatus from other stations as well.

"By having the engine back in service permanently, this saves time, wear and tear on the tower truck and most importantly, we maintain fire apparatus for second and third calls that may come in at the same time," Lambel said.

Engine 13 is similar to the tower truck in terms of amenities, Lambel added. It also contains more heavy-duty extrication equipment.

Paul Conway Shields Announces New Marketing Director

Lisa Strom

Paul Conway Shields announced the promotion of Lisa Le Strom from Marketing & Graphics Coordinator to its new Marketing Director for the company’s four divisions; Fire, Law, Safety and its Custom Shop.

“Lisa’s diverse skill sets and experience enables her to bring a strategic vision and focus to Paul Conway Shields,” said Paul Conway, President.  “She is very driven, results-oriented and highly collaborative and creative, which makes her a strong cultural fit for the company.”

As Marketing Director for Paul Conway Shields, Strom will be responsible for developing and implementing an overall corporate marketing strategy, directly engaging and managing the marketing team, and translating the company’s business objectives into marketing strategies that drive revenue.  In addition, she will determine and administer the marketing budget and identify/track key metrics.

Lisa holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Marketing with 15 years of experience in the field, managing key components such as advertising, promotions and event planning. Prior to her service with Paul Conway Shields, she spent over 12 years in the motorcycle industry with two Harley-Davidson dealers. During that time, she also had the opportunity to work with law enforcement and fire departments on safety awareness and charitable causes, including the WI Alliance for Fire Safety's Youth Burn Camp, the MDA and Support the Troops initiatives to name a few. Outside of work, Lisa has volunteered her skill sets with non-profit endurance sports programs such as Team in Training for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and Team Challenge - Crohn's & Colitis Foundation.

“The Paul Conway Shields brand is established in our market and Lisa’s expertise and creativity will allow us to capitalize on that strength and help us to grow our divisions,” stated Pam Lillard, the company’s former marketing manager.
