FDIC International/FAMA Product Showcase

Thursday, April 21, 2016, 10:30 a.m., 500 Ballroom

FDIC International and FAMA will present “The 3rd Dimension of Your Emergency Scene” at the 2016 FDIC International/FAMA Showcase. The Showcase will feature a special presentation by Matt Sloane on unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in the fire service. These “eyes in the sky” bring a new visual perspective and added advantages to every emergency incident and are increasingly being used all across the public safety services. The special presentation will cover what every fire department needs to know about this popular emerging technology. One lucky attendee will take home a drone provided by W.S. Darley & Company (for the fire department but must be present to win).

Plus don’t miss the FAMA New Products Showcase: Chris Mc Loone, senior editor of Fire Apparatus & Emergency Equipment, will highlight the “Do Not Miss” New Products and Technologies being introduced on the show floor by FAMA member companies. This “sneak peek” will highlight those must-see products and technologies being introduced at the show. Event attendees will receive a show guide with additional details of these products to direct them to these latest technologies.

Matt Sloane is CEO and director of partnerships for Skyfire Consultng, LLC, a fire-/rescue-focused UAV consultancy. His experience includes serving as Chief Of Resources, Planning, and Development at Emory EMS service, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, and 15 years as a CNN producer. Sloane has a great deal of experience in and around disaster scenes from both sides of the police line and has used his combined knowledge of public safety and video production to create Skyfire.

Poteau Firefighters Encounter Equipment Issues at Grass Fire

Five fire departments battled flames that burned about 600 acres of land in LeFlore County.

"It was probably the biggest fire that I've seen in the last five years," Poteau Fire Captain Don Goforth said Monday (Feb. 22).

Goforth said while all of the department's equipment is up-to-date, not everything went perfectly during last week's grass fire.

"Some of our equipment did break down," he said. "We had to replace an alternator on one of our grass trucks. And one of the grass trucks water pumps broke down, so we did get that fixed."

He said fixing the alternator only cost about $75, but adds it's not the first time they've had to fix something while on the scene.

"It's hard on the vehicles, and it's hard on the fireman, so stuff does break down, but we fix it," he said.

And while Goforth said he can't speak for other departments, he said Poteau firefighters are prepared if any major fires spark in the near future.

Aside from the Poteau Fire Department, Pocola, Monroe, Wister and Hogeye departments all worked the grass fire.
